Unsustainable living Team 1: Leah Silverman, Sam Berkheimer, David Morris, Erik Schlenker
Leah Silverman • Live in/near New York City • Have a steady job with a chemical engineering company • Be able to visit family in Pennsylvania
Why Technology Interferes • Terrible air quality in cities • Overcrowding • Huge amounts of garbage produced • Increasing fuel costs lead to more difficult transportation
David Morris • I hope to be a Mechanical Engineer not really sure where it will take me, but optimistic for the future. • I have always liked to work I have worked for Non-Profit Organizations, The Philadelphia Zoo, and now at The Penn State Bakery.
Effects of Technology • Cost of maintenance • Change in the way that jobs are accomplished • Less work force = Less jobs
Sam Berkheimer • I enjoy hunting among other outdoor activities • I want to own my own land that I can manage for outdoor use especially deer hunting • Many management goals focus on maximizing herd populations on a minimal amount of land
Problems • CWD (chronic wasting disease) • Management of deer herds is very energy intensive, therefore increasingly expensive and unsustainable • Living away of developed areas increases the amount of transportation needed for all needs ex. Power lines, food, distance to work, etc.
Erik Schlenker • I hope to one day practice civil engineering somewhere • I hope to have a family someday, and hopefully we will be able to live in an area that has low environmental hazard. • Hopefully, we will be able to live in a home that we can heat and cool, have good water, etc.
What gets in the way? • Technology taking jobs away (robots doing tasks previously done by humans, electronic communication allows outsourcing to other countries, etc) • Pollution problems
