  4. About the Maccabiah Games • The ‘Jewish Olympics’ – takes place every four years in Israel, run by the Maccabi World Union. • 3rd largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and World Masters Games. • Over 8,000 athletes participants in Open, Junior, Masters & Paralympic categories. • 2009: 51 Countries competing in 31 Sports. • 2013: Expecting 60-70 countries competing in 34 sports; Australian delegation likely to be around 400-500 people (incl. athetes, management, security, medical etc.)

  5. Cricket @ Maccabiah • Australia has sent teams since 1973 • 3 x Gold, 3 x Silver, 2 x Bronze • Opportunity to play cricket in unique, tough conditions vs. countries like England, Israel, South Africa & India. • Typically held as one-day 50-over matches in tournament format, ending with a gold medal final. • It’s more than just a cricket/sporting trip – • Pre-camp with entire Australian team • Cultural/tourist activities (e.g. Dead Sea, Masada, Jerusalem…) • Meeting Jewish people and other Jewish cricketers from other countries.

  6. Cricket @ Maccabiah (cont.) • 2013 Cricket Age Categories: • Open Mens • Junior Boys (15-18 yrs, DOB between 1 Jan 1995 – 31 Dec 1998) • Both teams have a Team/Section Manager, and the Juniors will also have a Coach.

  7. Key Dates for the Games

  8. Accommodation • Pre-camp: • Entire Australian team based together in one accommodation centre in Jerusalem. • During the Games: • All junior teams will stay in one accommodation centre together (i.e. all sports, all countries) • Participants from each of the competing Open cricket countries all stay together in the same accommodation centre.

  9. Costs & Fundraising • Approx. costs are $11,000 per athlete • In 2009 the cost was $10,000 (an increase of only 2.5% p.a.) • Includes all travel, accommodation, meals, uniforms, training in Israel • By comparison: Australian National Swim team 21 day trip costs $11,550 excluding bathers and equipment, tours, security, management & infrastructure support.

  10. Costs & Fundraising (cont.) Approximate Cost Breakdown:

  11. Costs & Fundraising (cont.) • The $11K figure can be reduced significantly through individual/team fundraising: • Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) tax-deductible donations • Advertising in Team Handbook • Team Sponsorship (e.g. Financial, clothing/equipment) • Fundraising events (e.g. movie nights, raffles, parties etc.) • Team Fundraising is typically undertaken to cover costs such as a coach, cricket whites/uniforms, and ‘on-the-ground’ expenses during the games such as water, ice etc.

  12. Costs & Fundraising (cont.) • There may be other small costs, such as those costs incurred for playing strips, training camps/selection trial, or to send selectors interstate etc. • The general idea is that these costs are covered by team fundraising activities. • Any such costs would be borne equally by all squad members (e.g. so that no players are prejudiced based on their location)

  13. How do you get to go? • Submit a nomination form online by June 30 2012: www.maccabi.com.au/maccabiah/cricket • Include the $1,000 nomination fee (refundable if not selected or if you withdraw prior to selection) • All nominees become part of the ‘squad’ from which the final teams will be selected by a panel. • Final selected teams will consist of 13 players in both Open and Juniors. • Team selections to be finalised by 10 December 2012. • Selection Process: A Selection Charter document has been created on the website. The way selection will be conducted will be finalised by the selection panel/s once nominations have closed.
