Alkali-Silica Reactivity • Marathon County • Quarries containing – rhyolite, diorite, gniess, and quartzite. • Hanz, 3M, and Weisenberger Quarries.
Alkali-Silica Reactivity • A process in which silica in the presence of moisture, is broken down by alkalis produces an expansive gel. • The expanding gel creates internal forces that causes the concrete to crack.
Alkali-Silica Reactivity • Concrete coarse aggregate needs to meet ASTM C1260 (every 3 years). • Special Provision for 2014 – • Spec Book in 2015.
Alkali-Silica Reactivity • If fails… • 1. Use 35% slag grade 120. • 2. Class “F” fly ash • 3. Mix specific test ASTM C1567 (every 3 years). • Cement / fly ash • Blend (percentages) and sources.
Alkali-Silica Reactivity • Weisenberger Quarry has two approved C1567 mixes (County Materials – Marathon City and Rothschild plants).
