  1. CMS End Cap Muon ChambersMP9 Production Readiness Review Follow-upJune 29, 2000 Nelson Chester Project Engineer • Considerations Since Last Review • Design & Drawing Status • Chambers • Tooling • Chamber Configuration Control • Manpower Status & Plans • Concerns and Pending Changes • Summary and Conclusions 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  2. Background Considerations • Of the 5 chamber types only ME23/2 (largest chamber) will be assembled at Fermilab in MP 9. • A quantity of 144 + 2 spares chambers of this type required…. 4 Chambers completed as of 7/1/00. • Goal - To complete production in June, 2003 - 3.0 years. • Must Complete 74 chambers by Jan. 2002 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  3. Changes Since Last Review • Responsibility for Frame Design and Procurement moved from UWM to Fermilab. Means added Resources Required to Complete Designs, Procurement, Inspection and Kit Preparation • Added New Wiring Harness with 19 Pin HV Connectors to Replace 7 and 13 Pin Connectors • Frame features modified to accommodate New HV Connector Wiring Harness, Electronics Cooling Plate, and Cathode Cable Strain Relief • Ground Lugs added to Panels at each Strip Connector • Retro-Reflective Targets and Alignment Strips added to Inner Cathode Panels (2 on wide end & 2 on narrow end) • Gas fittings added to Bulkhead Connectors • Bleed Resistors (SIP’s) added to Ground Strips • Modified Anode Side Panels (added holes) and Anode Protection Boards (removed latches) to Accommodate Anode Front End Circuit Cards 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  4. Design, Drawing Statusand Configuration Control • All ME234/2 Chamber Drawings have been Updated to Include Requested Design Changes • Revised Drawings Have Been Circulated, Reviewed, and Approved by All Level 2 and 3 Managers, and Responsible Sub-Groups Representatives • Revised ME 234/2 Chamber Drawings Reflecting Requested Design Changes Now in Engineering Release Process • Signed Travelers have been Updated to Accommodate Design Changes • In Accordance with Project Management Plan, the Product Configuration Change Specifications Describing the Approved Design Drawings have been Approved and Signed by All Required Level 2 and 3 Managers • All Needed Tooling is Available and Operational To Meet Short Term Schedules; Additional Tooling On Order to Meet Full Production Rate 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  5. Lab 8 Manpower • Panel Production Rate is Met with the Planned 2.4 FTE Rate • Current Rate is Down due to Loss of Valued Worker • Adequate Supply of Finished Panels (50%of Required) to Meet Production Needs • Some Catch-up May Be Required if Delays Persist 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  6. MP9 Manpower • Current Labor Force at 5 Technicians • Two Chambers Essentially Produced in June with 4-5 Technicians • Will Grow to 7 Technicians by November, 2000 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  7. Materials Control Plan • Procurement, Inventory, Inspection, and Kit Preparation for Frame Parts in addition to other Chamber Parts now Responsibility of TD Materials Control Group • One FTE to be Added to IB4 Group to Handle Inventory and Kit Preparation • One Half FTE for 2 years to be Added to Procurement Group to Handle Additional Frame Load 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  8. Concerns and Pending Changes • Alternate High Voltage Connectors are being Considered • Decision to be Made by End July • Estimated Cost ~50% of Baseline • Readily Available - CERN Can Produce • Production Testing of Chambers May Continue Without High Voltage Harness • Minor Additional Work Required to Add Harness Later • Frame Extrusions Must Be Procured Soon 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review

  9. Summary and Conclusions • Four Chambers Successfully Completed Using Only Production Tooling Consistent With Configuration Requirements • All Materials Available To Continue Production; Available Tooling is Adequate with Additional Tooling Ordered to Accommodate Ramp Up • Current Staff and Hiring Plans are Adequate to Meet Production Needs • All Technical Documentation (Drawings, Specifications, and Travelers) In Place and Being Used • Ramp Up Requirements Understood and Addressed 2nd MP9 Production Readiness Review
