Dodson MS SRLA 2013-2014
Our Mission • Students Run LA (SRLA) is a school-based mentoring and physical fitness program for at-risk middle and high school students in the Los Angeles area. • The mission of Students Run LA is to challenge these students to experience the benefits of goal setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the ASICS LA Marathon. • Students who participate in SRLA learn to set and achieve goals, make new friends and become part of a team, and gain leadership skills.
Our History • In 1986, a continuation high school teacher, Harry Shabazian, in East Los Angeles finished the first LA Marathon and felt personally transformed by the experience. • He then challenged his students, who were in trouble or headed for it, to train with him for the next LA Marathon and change their lives as well. • These young people, labeled misfits and under-achievers, not only finished the LA Marathon the following year, but also finished high school and went to college and jobs.
Our History (cont.) • Since 1989, more than 51,000 students have been served by SRLA. The growth of the program has only increased its success. Each year: • More than 95% of the students who start the marathon, finish the full 26.2 mile course • More than 95% of the seniors who run the marathon graduate from high school • More than 90% of SRLA graduating seniors have plans to attend college
Last Year’s Stats • March 2013, 99% of the 3184 SRLA runners completed the ASICS LA Marathon. • June 2013, 99% of the 693 SRLA seniors who completed the marathon with SRLA graduated from high school • 95% of them plan to go to college or university in September 2013.
What is SRLA’s impact on students? • Students become physically active for an average of ten hours a week as they prepare for the Marathon. • Students who finish the Marathon with SRLA tend to graduate from high school • SRLA students report getting better grades and missing fewer days of school • SRLA students are more likely to have plans to attend college or university after their high school graduation.
