Monday, October 15, 2012 Anchorage Public School Reading/Language/Writing Students will read for informational text using the story “Two Lands, One Heart.” Vocabulary words from the story are: equivalent, irrigation, appetizing, hysterically, interpreter, occasionally, and overwhelm. This week’s language skill is dependent and independent clauses and the reading skill is comparing and contrasting. Students will take a test on Friday for comprehension of the story and its vocabulary. Math This week in math we will kick off our multiplication unit.  We will devote the majority of the week to: finding all factor pairs for a given number & determining if a number is a multiple of a given number.  At the end of the week we will start differentiating between prime & composite numbers.  Our next quiz is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23rd.   Science Students will begin the week by discussing their zoo experience. Students will view a slide show put together from the zoo, discuss the rubric that will accompany the zoo journals that are due Friday, and begin the Life Science section of Study Island. I will be away from the classroom Thursday and Friday at the National Science Teachers Association’s National Convention. Social Studies This week in social studies we are applying our longitude and latitude knowledge and skills to Kentucky.  We will discuss the importance of the Wilderness Road and Cumberland Gap to the exploration of Kentucky. Also,  we will study the different explorers in the settlement and places of Kentucky's first settlements. Finally, we will analyze the goals of the Boonesborough Convention. Upcoming Dates: October 15th- Midterm reports signed and returned. October 18th- Musical program at 1:00 p.m. October 26th- Halloween Parade and Haunted House October 30th- Picture Retakes November 6th- Parent / Teacher Conferences. No school for students.
