LOTF Review Activity: “making sense of where we’re at” with just over half of the novel remaining . . . Creating an Interactive Study Guide Template for keeping track ofthe importantplot, theme, and “other” (figurative language, symbolism, irony, foreshadowing, for example? )elements of the novel
Chapter 1 (pgs. 7-31) • title: Sound of the Shell • Meet all of the characters • Ralph & Piggy find the conch • Ralph is elected leader • Ralph, Simon, and Jack climb the mountain • Jack is unable to kill the pig • General Summary: • The group of stranded boys, led by Ralph (although not without some opposition), look upon their situation as an exciting adventure made all the better by the lack of adults to tell them what to do
Chapter 2 (pgs. 32-47) • title:Fire on the Mountain • The boys accidentally set fire to the mountain • birthmark boy is killed • Jack begins to challenge Ralph’s leadership • The “beastie” incident • General Summary: • Ralph handles his first leadership challenge poorly, and as a result the boys momentarily get ‘out of control’ with tragic consequences
Chapter 3 (pgs. 48-57) • title: _________ on the __________ • Ralph & Simon build shelters • Simon suggests that the “beastie” might be real • Jack tries to hunt • Ralph taunts Jack a little about his inability to kill a pig • But it’s more of a reflection of Ralph’s frustrationwith getting so little help from Jack and others than it is about trying to make Jack mad • Simon goes into the forest alone • General Summary: • Ralph and Jack are starting to fight indirectly, as Ralph also begins to recognize that leadership isn’t all it’s cracked up to be; Simon behaves somewhat . . . oddly??
Chapter 4 (pgs. 58-75) • title: ________ Faces ____ Long _____ • Jack kills a pig • Made all that much easier by the ‘freedom’ of his mask • The boys miss out on rescue • Jack’s conflict with Ralph intensifies • the twoopenly argue in front of the other boys • Jack also breaks one side of Piggy’s glasses • Simon again defends Piggy (this time, during the eating of the pig) • General Summary: • The boys are starting to become increasingly more savage, a development that directly gets in the way of their being saved
Chapter 5 (pgs. 76-94) • title: ____________ from __________ • Ralph tries to hold a “Come to Jesus” meeting to “set things straight,” but unfortunately it doesn’t go very well • Guess that happens when you’re in way over your head • Jack directly fights with Ralph (although it’s only verbally), and suggests that Ralphshouldn’t be the leader any longer • The “beastie” incident intensifies • Simon suggests that not only might the beast be real, but it might be . . . them • General Summary: • Thingsareincreasingly falling apart for Ralph and Piggy, whileJackseems to be “picking up steam” with each Ralph misstep; Simon isnot helping Ralph muchwithhis increasingly strange and ill-timed opinions about thebeastie. . . orwas it beast?!
