Our Mission • The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) awards grants to fund agencies to "Bridge the Digital Divide". • Our purpose (Parkland College) is to target 300 individuals from the lowest income neighborhoods within Champaign-Urbana area. • Through our proposed programming for Bridging the Digital Divide, each participant will receive at least 28 hours of project based, hands-on and practical technology training where they will receive knowledge of basic computer skills, typing instructions, internet connectivity and access to certification training. Following our current format for Computer Literacy at Parkland College's Mattis facility, participants will have access to GED training, job placement information and printing services.   Brian D. Illinois Worknet Center • Class dynamics, basic overview • Over 40 • Unemployed • 50/50 Male – Female • 50/50 Minority – Non Minority (white non-hispanic) • 50% + no computer or internet access at home • Some areas have no access at all (Comcast etc) dial up only!   Brian D. How we help • Classroom style and one on one instruction. • Move clients into the future with knowledge of hardware, operating systems and applications. • From the last computer they used to the computer that’s coming out next month! • From Windows XP to Seven and Linux • From embedded applications to portable, open source, online, cloud and thinned. Bridge the gap, by catching people up to speed, and insist they keep that speed.

What can we do about it • Continue to forge relationships with organizations and corporations who donate out of service machines. • Stress the importance of catching up and staying caught up with technology. • Telephone analogy. (PC in every home) • Is Poverty an excuse? • Sell relevance / importance of education • Create interest in technology • Power of flash drives, portable apps, online apps.   Brian D.
