Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI): Part 3 Bethany Geldmaker PNP, PhD Tracy Jebo MPH
Learning Objectives • Review results of the Self-Assessment Survey results • Results of on line vote on priority area to develop a CQI plan based on the self- assessment survey and Advisory Board feedback • Developing the CQI plan • PDSA Cycle
CQI Process: PDSA Cycle • CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement): Involving all stakeholders to examine the performance of a process and address identified gaps • The use of a deliberate and defined improvement process • Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle will be used for this project
PDSA Cycle: Nine Steps The PDSA cycle is used to improve existing processes, not to plan or implement new programs Always relies on data to support its decisions
Self-Assessment Survey: 11/2013 Purpose: to capture the professional development and training process • professional development training • quality of professional development • role of continuous quality improvement in professional development activities • evaluation activities • data collection and analysis
Self-Assessment Survey: Key Findings • Strengths Identified by survey: • Members of the ECMHAB are involved in early childhood mental health initiatives, supportive of offering cross-disciplinary training and knowledgeable about the populations they serve • Trainings delivered are high quality • ECMHAB members are familiar with both project’s logic models (95%) and evaluation plans (76%) • Members are aware of their opportunity to provide input into quality improvement measures
Self-Assessment Survey: Key Findings • Training and Education Needs • Information about trainings (updates on attendance, registration process, logistical details) • Reporting back outcome data to advisory board from evaluations • CQI and PDSA process • Outcome data: reviewing what is available and what is collected
Self-Assessment Survey: Key Findings • Perceived Gaps/Opportunities for Improvement: • Communication methods • # of trainings insufficient to meet needs (regional/specialty-specific or both?) • Meeting needs of different cultures and literacy levels • Ensuring evidence-based practices and programs are being implemented
Follow-Up Vote: 2014 CQI Plan Three areas were presented to the Board for a priority vote: (1) Cultural Competency: Analyze data on who is attending trainings to see if demographics are representative of the overall population. (2) Unmet Training Needs: Conduct a survey or collect available data to identify regional or specialty-specific gaps. (3) Communication: Map out state and regional processes for advertising trainings to investigate where and/or what gaps exist.
PDSA Cycle: Plan-Do-Study-Act Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle (Steps 1-2) • Step 1: Identifying a problem • Unmet Training Needs • Self-assessment survey and priority vote • Step 2: Assembling a Q.I. team that can address the problem • ECMHAB
PDSA Cycle: Plan-Do-Study-Act Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle (Step 3) • Step 3: Identify what the true cause(s) of the problem may be, map the process to understand the existing activities that lead to the problematic issue • This is where we will work today!
PDSA Step 3: Identify Problem Unmet Training Needs • Identify any specific gaps where the number of trainings is insufficient to meet the need (regional/specialty-specific or both) • Discussion (questions follow) • Identify any data/information currently available for this problem • Identify what additional data/information we need before moving forward • Identify any known gaps
PDSA Step 3: Identify Problem • Discussion Question 1 What other mental health trainings are out there? Who provides them?
PDSA Step 3: Identify Problem • Discussion Question 2 How are these trainings advertised?
PDSA Step 3: Identify Problem • Discussion Question 3 How do we know that the number of trainings are not sufficient to meet the need?
PDSA Step 3: Identify Problem • Discussion Question 4 What additional data/information do we need in order to better understand the unmet needs?
PDSA Cycle: Plan-Do-Study-Act Step 4: Brainstorming and conducting background research to look for possible solutions Step 5: Working to develop a theory of improvement that can be tested
Plan-Do-Study-Act Plan-Do-Study-Act Cycle • Step 6: Test your theory of improvement • Step 7: Study the Results of your Test • Step 8: Either standardize your improvement (if test was successful) or develop a new theory for improvement (if test was unsuccessful) • Step 9: Establish Future Plans
Next Steps in Moving the Process Forward • Take discussion from today and develop materials to map out the process. • May include: • Draft survey? Survey response data? • Presentation of additional data found? • Draft process map? • Next Board meeting: • PDSA Steps 3 & 4: present results and possible process MAP for feedback
