• The ‘Midlands’: An economic pole • Strategies for growth • Supra-LEP activity • The benefit of an ‘imagined geography’
• Text Box
• West Midlands experienced the largest percentage increase in exports between 2010 and 2013 (19.3%) of any English region • Compares to overall declines over the same period in the North West, London and the South East • Top export partners by value • West Midlands: China, USA, Germany, France, Netherlands • East Midlands: USA, Germany, Belgium, Singapore, Ireland

• West Midlands • Greater Birmingham & Solihull • Coventry & Warwickshire • Stoke on Trent & Staffordshire • The Black Country • The Marches • Worcestershire • East Midlands • Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire • Greater Lincolnshire • Leicester and Leicestershire • Northamptonshire • South East Midlands • Greater Cambridgeshire and Peterborough • Sheffield City Region
• Enterprise deaths net change was between -0.1 and 1.2% compared to a England average of 1.5% • Highest enterprise births in South East Midlands: 7,360 • Highest Enterprise deaths in Greater Birmingham and Solihull: 6,725
• Huge variation in the nature, length and thoroughness of strategic economic plans • There is a need for greater emphasis on long term economic sustainability and resilience to work alongside the immediate demand for rapid productivity gains • Differentiation, but still all focusing on the same themes….
• All except The Marches and Greater Lincolnshire cite the importance of maximising the benefit of HS2 • Seen as a catalyst for physical regeneration • Potential to transform connectivity of the region. • Other transport based growth aims: • East Midlands Gateway Rail Freight Interchange - a 250 acre distribution and logistics development alongside East Midlands Airport and the M1. • Spalding Rail Freight Hub -infrastructure investment to facilitate the development of a 60 hectare rail freight interchange at Deeping Fen to support further growth of food processing.
• Is there any advantage to the strategic co-ordination of some economic functions / policy interventions East-West? • ‘Think Midlands’ could involve co-operation at supra-LEP scale around a set of ‘value-chain’ activities. For example: • Infrastructure (HS2, regional airports) • Clusters and value chains (MAA; AMSCI; Formula E) • Labour markets (challenge of engineering) • Global inward investment brand
• An example of actual potential… • The Midlands Aerospace Alliance was formed in 2003 to support and represent the aerospace industry across the Midlands region • Share knowledge and information • To improve the market and business support opportunities of members • Deliver support programmes to members • To directly improve the performance of our individual members • Lead coordination of shared strategy • To ensure that the Midlands voice is fully represented in the formation of national aerospace strategies and programmes
An example of immanent potential… • Formula E is a new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series • A vision for the future of the motor industry, a framework for R&D and a way of accelerating interest in Low carbon vehicles • All ten teams will be based at, and develop the cars from, a base at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire • The value of the Formula E supply chain will be between £30m-£50m by 2015 with benefits extending to advanced manufacturing companies across the East and West Midlands
• Northern Economic Futures Framework for Growth • 12 point plan for Northern economic growth • Establishes a more coherent Northern voice • Greater ‘Policy traction’ through a Midlands mind-set?
• Forum 48 - placing the Midlands alongside core regions globally • Solutions for cities, universities, businesses and place-makers to collaborate more intelligently • This partnership is the foundation of their global competitive advantage
