  16. 16 • All except The Marches and Greater Lincolnshire cite the importance of maximising the benefit of HS2 • Seen as a catalyst for physical regeneration • Potential to transform connectivity of the region. • Other transport based growth aims: • East Midlands Gateway Rail Freight Interchange - a 250 acre distribution and logistics development alongside East Midlands Airport and the M1. • Spalding Rail Freight Hub -infrastructure investment to facilitate the development of a 60 hectare rail freight interchange at Deeping Fen to support further growth of food processing.

  17. 17 • Is there any advantage to the strategic co-ordination of some economic functions / policy interventions East-West? • ‘Think Midlands’ could involve co-operation at supra-LEP scale around a set of ‘value-chain’ activities. For example: • Infrastructure (HS2, regional airports) • Clusters and value chains (MAA; AMSCI; Formula E) • Labour markets (challenge of engineering) • Global inward investment brand

  18. 18 • An example of actual potential… • The Midlands Aerospace Alliance was formed in 2003 to support and represent the aerospace industry across the Midlands region • Share knowledge and information • To improve the market and business support opportunities of members • Deliver support programmes to members • To directly improve the performance of our individual members • Lead coordination of shared strategy • To ensure that the Midlands voice is fully represented in the formation of national aerospace strategies and programmes

  19. 19 An example of immanent potential… • Formula E is a new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series • A vision for the future of the motor industry, a framework for R&D and a way of accelerating interest in Low carbon vehicles • All ten teams will be based at, and develop the cars from, a base at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire • The value of the Formula E supply chain will be between £30m-£50m by 2015 with benefits extending to advanced manufacturing companies across the East and West Midlands

  20. 20 • Northern Economic Futures Framework for Growth • 12 point plan for Northern economic growth • Establishes a more coherent Northern voice • Greater ‘Policy traction’ through a Midlands mind-set?
