    1. VSU College of Nursing Admission Advising Session Students applying for admission into Fall 2011 Class Traditional Program October 6, 2010

    2. Eligible to Apply NOW? If ALL of the pre-nursing core courses and other admission requirements can be met by the end of Summer 2011 semester, you are eligible to apply for admission to the Fall 2011 class. Special Notes: Course load to be completed may require special permission, if the number of credit exceeds a normal, full time course load. The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) must be completed prior to application deadline. Other standardized nurse entrance tests may be acceptable – contact Ms. Nicole Gunn (npgunn@valdosta.edu) October 6, 2010

    3. Step 1: Process of Application Attend MANDATORY Applicant Advising session If a student resides 4 hours or more away from the College of Nursing campus, then he/she may be eligible for alternate mandatory applicant advising. Applications will not be reviewed unless applicant attended a Mandatory Applicant Advising Session. October 6, 2010

    4. Calculate certification GPA Prior to encumbering the cost of application, we recommend you calculate certification GPA The student must have a minimum 2.8 GPA of the core courses for consideration. Use the calculator available at http://www.valdosta.edu/nursing/PerspectiveStudents.shtml October 6, 2010

    5. Step 2: Process of Application Apply to Valdosta State University if not already enrolled. http://www.valdosta.edu/admissions/ Apply early to VSU must be accepted to the university early enough so that acceptance to the university is completed by the deadline for application to nursing Allow several weeks for processing of transcripts by admissions office October 6, 2010

    6. Step 3: Process of Application Apply to College of Nursing (via NursingCAS) Deadline: February 15 at 5:00 p.m. - traditional program admission Application available online only at Nursing CAS website https://portal.nursingcas.org October 6, 2010

    7. Nursing Centralized Application Service (NursingCAS) Valdosta State University College of Nursing participates in the Nursing Centralized Application Service and all nursing applications must be submitted through NursingCAS. Application available at NursingCAS website https://portal.nursingcas.org General information about NursingCAS is available at http://nursingcas.org October 6, 2010

Nursing Centralized Application Service (NursingCAS) Please note that all supporting documentation required by NursingCAS (non-refundable application fee, transcripts, etc) must be submitted to NursingCAS and not to the College of Nursing. Supplemental application information should be submitted directly to the College of Nursing. Please see CON website for required supplemental information and the process for submitting the supplemental information. NursingCAS will verify your application for accuracy, calculate your GPA, and send your materials to the Nursing programs you designate. October 6, 2010

TEAS (Entrance) Testing Entrance testing may be repeated only once during any admission cycle -Whether taking the TEAS or another approved entrance test OR a combination of tests, only 2 combined attempts will be allowed Dates for testing are linked on VSU Nursing Homepage under “Prospective Students” http://www.valdosta.edu/nursing/PerspectiveStudents.shtml Must contact the office to reserve a seat. Reservations will not be confirmed until payment by money order has been received in College of Nursing Office October 6, 2010

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Standardized Test (TEAS – RN) Compares your ability against level of mastery required for success in college Objective measure of your critical abilities in: Math, Science, Reading, English Basic math for professional practice Speed in reading college level material Identifies your learning style October 6, 2010

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) The TEAS is offered at VSU Testing Center Testing Fee is $35.00 if taken at VSU MUST be PAID 3 BUSINESS DAYS in ADVANCE Additional testing sites are available at the ATI site http://www.atitesting.com/ati_next_gen/customecom/SessionTypeSelection.aspx?stf=1 October 6, 2010

Step 5: Process of Application Once transcripts are evaluated by VSU Calculation of certification GPA will occur Verification of complete legislative and Regents examination requirements Exceptions and deadlines for transfer students related to Legislative and Regents requirements can be found in VSU catalog. October 6, 2010

Calculation of certification GPA Only required pre-requisite coursework for nursing major will be considered Based on quality points for every attempt at coursework applying to the major Does not include coursework for which you are registered the term you apply GPA calculator located at www.valdosta.edu/nursing (under prospective students) October 6, 2010

    17. Important Dates for Fall 2011Traditional Program Admission February 10, 2011: Last date to take the TEAS Test for consideration for admission Fall 2011 February 15, 2011: Applications (complete) due to Nursing CAS by 5:00 pm October 6, 2010

Notification Dates First week in March, 2011 – acceptance responses posted through NursingCAS Initial offers for class seating: will be followed by letters posted to student address Unconditional acceptance Conditional acceptance : Notification of non-acceptance Acceptance letters from students are due to College of Nursing Monday, March 21, 2011 by 12:00 noon in order to guarantee admission or seat will be offered to another qualified applicant (continued) October 6, 2010

Notification Dates (Cont) Friday, March 25, 2011 (Phase 2 Notification Letters) Letters mailed out for any seats made available after Phase 1 Letters mailed out for applications not accepted due to space availability restrictions (no space available letters) Notes: Positions which become vacant due to applicants not successfully completing required pre-requisite coursework and all admission requirements will be offered to qualified students who were sent no space available letters Applicants receiving no space available letters are STRONGLY encouraged to continue with completion of outstanding pre-requisite requirements in case a space becomes available at a later time October 6, 2010

Acceptance into College of Nursing Competitive admissions process is based on limitations in resources Minimum Certification GPA requirement is 2.8 Note: repeated coursework will be averaged into total certification GPA Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Successful completion of Regent’s Testing Program “C” in each science course, including Pathophysiology (science courses may be repeated only once) October 6, 2010

Acceptance & Preparation Notification of acceptance and conditions will be sent in acceptance letters Required documentation and due dates included in acceptance letters Signed College of Nursing health form -- from physician or nurse practitioner indicating health requirements met Immunizations Must meet conditions of Performance Standards (found at http://www.valdosta.edu/nursing/PerformanceStandards.shtml Notify Dean immediately of issues related to meeting physical examination criteria October 6, 2010

Acceptance and Preparation Health insurance Must use required insurance through Pearce & Pearce University System of Georgia Requirement will be charged to tuition unless waived May apply to waive : http://www.studentinsurance.com Apply early for waiver, if you already have insurance October 6, 2010

    23. Drug Screening & Finger Printing Required—Do not have these performed until instructed to do so by the CON May be required more than once, depending on clinical placement site Initial & Repeat drug screening cost vary from $25-$75, depending on type of tests required by clinical sites Random drug screening and drug screening “for cause” may be required, at the student’s expense October 6, 2010

Special considerations for Planning - Nursing Majors Professional Liability insurance will be required Drug screening Criminal background check Clinical coursework requirements Travel – you must have your own car Scheduling - nights and weekends are possibility CPR (Basic Cardiac Life Support for Health Care Providers - American Heart Association only) Start planning for expenses once position accepted (Books, testing fees, etc.) IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS SEE Dean Hufft or Mr. Shirlock IMMEDIATELY October 6, 2010

New Student Orientation to the College of Nursing Mandatory 8:00AM - 3:30 PM Thursday, August 11, 2011 ATI Critical Thinking Exam (No prep required for this exam) Presentations and activities are designed to inform the new nursing student of essential policies and procedures required in the CON October 6, 2010
