Background of the evaluation • Discipline and research field evaluations at the Academy of Finland is one of the key elements in a long-term development of research and science policy in our country • So far, around 30 different discipline evaluations carried out by AF • Research Council for Health: • Biotechnology in Finland, 2002 • Nursing and Caring Sciences, 2003 • Suggestion for dental evaluation from the researchers in the field • 1. step: Hearing of invited representatives, Oct 2005 • Decision to start the evaluation in Dec 2006
Purpose of the evaluation • The evaluation should cover the discipline (odontology) nationwide with a view to assessing the strengths and weaknesses of Finnish dental research and to secure internationally high-standard research/researchers in Finland in the future.
The evaluation steering group in 2006 The evaluation is commissioned by the Research Council for Health of the Academy of Finland Chair of the steering group Professor, Kalervo Väänänen, Chair of the Research Council for Health Vice Chair Professor Hilkka Soininen Member Professor Tuula Salo The evaluation steering group for the year 2007 will be nominated after new Research Council members will start their term of office.

Objectives of the evaluation • To evaluate the scientific quality of dentistry in Finland as compared to the international level • To identify the strengths and weaknesses of the research • To estimate communication and collaboration with key partners at home and abroad • To estimate the significance of dentistry in Finnish society • To evaluate the efficacy of the research, i.e. how much scientific output is produced in relation to the resources invested • To evaluate the quality of research training • To make suggestions and recommendations to ensure the complement of qualified academicians in Finland in the future • To make suggestions and recommendations for the further development of dental research and research policy in Finland
