  1. BURUNDI Eng. NkurikiyeRamadhan Eng. NdayisabaAstère City of Bujumbura, BURUNDI Population of Bujumbura: 1 100 000 Area: 86.9 Km²

  2. URBAN CHALLENGE: solide waste Current challenge or problem your city faces • Non-decent habitat following the spread of solidwaste in household and publics areas • The City of Bujumbura has initiated the project “Clean and waste free Bujumbura” whose goal is to clean the city by collecting all waste and transform them into energy or fertilizer. Feasibility studies are already available. The project will be carried out under the framework of Public Private Partership (PPP). Technical and Financial ressources are the obstacle to the implementation of the project. The expected result of this project is the evaluation of waste as useful product to the population

  3. Keystakeawayfrom the course Areas and concepts are relevant to our urban challenge • Our solid waste management challenge is the result of a lack of strong commitment from central government authorities and solid waste management planning. What are they, and how will they influence our approach and strategies? • According to the management system of the City Council of Bujumbura, the central government has not put a binding legislation that may apply to people who throw their waste in illegal dumps or in rivers and gutters. Waste management planning was not inclusive as local communities were not involved in its development.

  4. How we would do to amend our approach? First, we will consult with local communities to make them aware of the importance of living in a clean environment and to seek their views on the proper way of collecting waste. We will establish the triennial plan for solid waste management. Authorized institutions will be approached to put in place a specific law on waste management in gener

  5. What are some of the new interventions or strategies that you could explore? The strategy is the consultation of the population and the work in synergy with other stakeholders in the public or private sector. What are the clear project(s) for follow-ups? • Establish the waste management plan Who/which department would take the lead? • Technical Department of the Town Hall. What are the resources and expertise required? • Environmental, urban planning, project planning and community communication experts will be needed to train and strengthen existing human resource capacity or to recruit. What is the time frame of intervention? • The response time is six months
