  1. NWACC Engineering Club 2012 Creative Learning of Engineering: Elmdale Elementary Educational Outreach Project Members: Dr Michael Zelin, PhD. DavaughnJackson, Erik Frey.

  2. NWACC Engineering Club 2012 • Project Details • Hands-on Activities • Lessons Learned • Future Plans Carl Sagan said, “The visions we offer our children shape the future.” The United States is currently struggling in key areas of education such as: reading, math, and the sciences, compared to other leading industrialized nations. The purpose of this project was to expose elementary level children to basic engineering principles in a fun and highly educational environment. Thereby increasing their scientific understanding and hopefully encourage a new generation of engineers.

  3. DaVinci Challenge

  4. Exposed children to basic materials engineering principles. • Elastic deformation. • Plastic deformation. • Fracture features of crystalline lattice atomic structures. • Children bent angel hair pasta in Lego™ stress apparatus. • The child that bent the farthest without breaking won!

  5. Crazing in Plastics

  6. Crazing – occurs in plastics during deformation • Microscopic cracks form, leading to failure. • What the students accomplished • Measure the sample length. • Stretch the sample, without breaking. • Measure the final length. • Calculate elongation: e=(L-L0)/L0 x100%. • Longest elongation wins!

  7. Creative Learning of Engineering: Workshop

  8. Students were shown a presentation on engineering that can be found here. Creative Learning of Engineering: Workshop

  9. Students can continue the creative learning experience online at SponsorsChoose.org. The challenge continues, online!!http://sponsorschoose.org/engineeringclub/ccc/en/index.php

  10. Presented Material. • sponsorschoose.org/engineering. • Participating Student E-Portfolios. • Erik Frey • Davaughn Jackson Resources
