Confidentiality at the Workshops • con·fi·den·tial • 1. spoken, written, acted on, etc., in strict privacy or secrecy; secret: a confidential remark • 2. indicating confidence or intimacy; imparting private matters: a confidential tone of voice • 3. having another's trust or confidence; entrusted with secrets or private affairs: a confidential secretary.
Goal of the Workshop • To help you look at the work you are engaged in and evaluate your scholarly potential • To help you feel (more) confident and motivated in your ability to apply for promotion • To present an overview of the criteria for a senior promotion
Objectives At the end of this session participants will: • Understand and identify the criteria for promotion • Understand each of the four main components for promotion • Understand the steps in the promotion process

Senior Promotion Promotion is not granted as a reward for long-term service, but rather to recognize those who have excelled in specific aspects of the academic mission. The successful candidate for promotion will be expected to have established a wide reputation in his or her field of interest, to be deeply engaged in scholarly work, and to show him or herself to be an effective teacher.
Senior Promotion The term “wide” reputation is typically interpreted as the achievement of: National recognition for promotion to Associate Professor International recognition for promotion to Full Professor
Scholarly Work According to the University of Toronto Policy and Procedures Governing Promotions, promotion is based on accomplishments in scholarship: • Research • Creative Professional Activity (CPA) • Teaching and Education • Administrative service to the University
Scholarly Work Candidates are asked to document achievements in each applicable area. You need to demonstrate “excellence” in one of the areas and “competence” as a teacher as a minimum.

Research – Criteria for Promotion The candidate should prepare a one to two page statement of research activities describing the importance and impact of the research. Criteria: • Record of sustained and current productivity in research and research-related activities. • Research advances will be communicated through the publication of papers, reviews, books and other scholarly works. • The quality of the scholarship in research will be judged in comparison to peers in the Faculty of Medicine and t others in the same field in peer institutions.
Research: continued on Page 11 - 14 Research Funding: • If seeking promotion on the basis of achievement in research, the candidate should have a strong and continuing record of external funding commensurate with the type and area of research Publications: • There must be a sustained records of scientific publications demonstrating that the research has lead to a significant source of new information in the field
Research: continued on Page 11 - 14 Scientific Presentations: • Presentations made at a national and international meetings will be considered • Invited presentations and named lectureships are a particular indicator of the individual’s reputation outside the university Participation, Leadership and Mentorship in the Research Community: • Examples of such activities include organization of international research meetings or symposia, leadership in research committees at national or international levels ….scientific advisory boards and councils…

CPA – Criteria for Promotion The candidate should prepare a one to two page statement of CPA activities describing the importance and impact of the research. Criteria: The Faculty of Medicine recognizes CPA under the following three broad categories: • Professional Innovation and Creative Excellence • Contributions to the Development of Professional Practice • Exemplary Professional Practice Examples of CPA
CPA Category # 1 • Professional Innovation and Creative Excellence • May include the making or developing of an invention, development of new techniques, conceptual innovations or education program inside or outside of the University (e.g. continuing medical education or patient education) • To demonstrate professional innovation, the candidate must show an instrumental role in the development, introduction and dissemination of an invention, anew technique, a conceptual innovation or an education program
CPA Category #2 • Contributions to the Development of Professional Practice • Must demonstrate leadership in the professional, professional organizations, government or regulatory agencies that has influenced standards and/or enhanced the effectiveness of the discipline • Examples may include (but not limited to) guideline development, health policy development, government policy, community development, international health and development, consensus conference statements, regulatory committees and setting of standards
CPA Category #3 3. Exemplary Professional Practice • Must show that his or her practice is recognized as exemplary by peers and has ben emulated or otherwise had an impact on practice
Assessing CPA – page 16 The following should be kept in mind: • Being a competent health care professional is not sufficient to meet the criterion of excellence in CPA • It is expected that most candidates will be engaged to some degree in CPA as part of their scholarly life • CPA in education may include: • Instructional innovation/creative excellence: teaching techniques, education innovations, curriculum development, course planning, evaluation development, leadership in the development of professional practice in health professional education

Teaching and Education – page 18 The candidate should prepare a statement of their approach to teaching, including an assessment of the impact of teaching activities. Criteria: (can be one or all) • Teaching/Education Activity • Quality of teaching/education contribution • Educational innovation and development • Education leadership • Education Scholarship
Teaching and Education – page 18 In the Faculty of Medicine, teaching an education can encompass the following components: • Formal teaching • Curriculum and course development • Application of information technologies for education • Educational leadership and administration • Faculty development • Scholarship in education • Research in education • Assessment of learners
Excellence in Education Candidates seeking promotion on the basis of excellence in education and teaching must demonstrate significant and high quality contributions to teaching and/or other education related activities in at least one of the following: • Sustain excellence in teaching: • Participation in education and curriculum development • Contribution to the field of health professional education • Education leadership in faculty, department, division or hospital

Administrative Service The candidate should prepare a brief outline of service activities. Use of bullet points is encouraged! • Administrative service in itself cannot be the main criteria for promotion • Significant service contributions may include (but not limited to): • Service to the Department, Faculty of Medicine, University: committee chair, lead coordinator of a special project, lead developer of faculty policies • Service to the professional, clinical or research discipline • Service to municipal, provincial or federal governments or non-government agencies
Five Publications orSignificant Scholarly Products Can include a variety of “work”: • Publications - peer reviewed journals • Book or book chapter • Government documents, reports • Curriculum design document • “Learning object” – eg. a teaching video • Websites (provide active URL) • National level work

The Pre-Application … start thinking: Faculty are required to submit a Senior Promotion Pre-Application package to the DFCM Senior Promotions Committee in order to obtain feedback regarding readiness for promotion.
