  1. GN3 Green networking workshop– Carbon accounting: direct action Methodology and accounting tool Jørgen Moth, UNI-C SURFnet, Utrecht 5-6 March 2012

  2. ICT Carbon Footprint 2% ?

  3. Introduction and Background:NRENs, their function and services

  4. ICT Carbon Footprint :Auditingtemplate • The aim of the template is to assist in the early stages of producing a greenhouse gas (GHG) report for a NREN or similar organization. • The GHG emissions are divided into four classes, viz. office, data centre, backbone and transportation

  5. ICT Carbon footprint:Auditingtemplate • A two step method is used to calculate the GHG emissions in each class. • The first step measures the energy consumption used by all activities of the class. • In the second step the GHG emissions derived from these energy consumptions are calculated using public available emission factors. Unless you provide your own electricity, the electricity GHG emission values from the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of EU should be used in order to build a fair standard of comparison between different NRENs.

  6. ICT Carbon footprint:GÉANT and four NRENs (2009 data)

  7. ICT CarbonFootprint:Estimatingyour national ICT impact DK examplecalculation (2009 figures): Total CO2e emission: 62.295.438 tonnes Population: 5.523.000 Emission per capita: 11,3 tonnes CO2e SMART 2020 ICT 2% assertion: 226 kg ICT CO2e per capita Electricity emission factor: 766 g/kWh ICT electricity power per capita per year: 295 kWh (A standard 100 W PC consumes 876 kWh per yearwhen never turnedoff)
