  1. Connecticut Mastery Test-4 (CMT-4) Informational Night February 27, 2013

Purpose of tonight • Gather information regarding the CMT • What, when, and why? • Try some CMT-like questions • math and language arts • Learn tips/strategies to utilize at home for you and your child • Ask questions about the CMT Agenda 6:45-7:00 brief overview 7:00 – 8:00 – break-out sessions

  3. What is the CMT? • State assessment given to each student in grades 3-8 • No Child Left Behind (NCLB) • State Education Department monitors each school's performance in order to determine whether it is achieving “adequate yearly progress" or AYP. • Standards rise each year • In 2014, the goal is to have every student, 100%, reach the proficient level.

  4. What is tested on the CMT? Grades 3-5 1. Math 2. Reading Reading Comprehension Students will read and respond to fiction and nonfiction passages Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) The teacher told the class a joke. Writing Writing Prompt Grade 3-4 Narrative writing Grade 5 Expository writing Editing and Composing/Revising 4. Science- grade 5

When is the CMT given? • Dates • Week of February 25th • March 4th – 14th (grades 3,4) • March 4th – 18th (grade 5) • Make-ups must be completed by March 28th • If a student is late to school he/she will not be allowed in the classroom. He/She will wait in a supervised location until the test is completed and will make up the test at a later time. • Not an all day assessment • Begin first thing in the morning at 9:30 • Tests range from 45 minutes to one hour

CMT Testing Schedule 2013 • Week of Feb. 25th Practice Test • March 4th Editing and Revising • March 5th Direct Assessment of Writing • March 6th Reading Comp 1 • March 7th Reading Comp 2 • March 11th DRP • March 12th Science-Gr. 5 Only • March 13th Math 1 • March 14th Math 2 • March 18th Math 3–Gr. 5 Only

  7. When will we get the results? • Your child’s results will be mailed to you in September • We use the results to assess strengths and weaknesses of each student to determine instructional needs

Strategies for you and your child • Eat a nutritious breakfast • Have a good night sleep • Encourage – reduce any anxiety • “The first and most important step toward success is the feeling that we can succeed.”Nelson Boswell • Exercise each day – increases oxygen to the brain!! • Practice reading over directions carefully ***These tips will help all students do their best!!
