  2. About The Sport Archery dates back all the way to the 10,000, where bows and arrows where used in modern warfare. It was commonly used in the England medieval times. This sport requires skill and nerve. Archery is practiced in more then 140 countries now. The athletes will shoot at the target from 70 meters away. There are two targets that an archer, or team will be assigned to one of the targets. The object of the game is to shoot the arrow as close as possible into the center of the target. The targets are 122cm in diameter and has a gold ring at the center. The center gold ring is worth 10 point at the maximum. The gold ring measures at 12.2 cm. Athletes will shoot at the target with recurve bows, distinctive by the limps that curve outward at the top of the bow. Archery became an Olympic sport at the Paris 1900 game. Archery was then dropped at the London 1908 games. It then returned for an appearance in 1920. Then wasn’t in the Olympics for 52 year. It then returned to the Olympics in the Munich 1972 and remained in the Olympic games ever since.

Cool Facts • The first known archery competition was in Finsbury, London in 1583 and it attracted 3,000 participants. • Actress, Geena Davis took part in the US Archery Trials for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. • In the 14th century, archery was so important for defending villages and kingdoms that the English law states that it is compulsory for men and women that were between the ages of 7-60 to learn archery. • An archery competitor is known as a bowman, the target is known as a boss, a draw is when you pull back on the bow’s string and a notch is the part of the bow that holds the bow string.
