  1. Cheap car? How much does Miles Per gallon Matter?

  2. Objective: • Students will Be able to determine the amount spent on gas, for a certain make and model of vehicle.

  3. Background Information: Mr. Jones bought his first new car in 2004. It was a purchase that was based on the following criteria: • Cheap to buy ~ Hyundai • Cheap to operate ~ 34 MPG Last Sunday, his car turned 70,000 miles.

  4. Now to the math • If, over the course of owning the car, the average price for a gallon of gas between 2004 and 2010, was $2.63, how much money has he spent on gas? How much was spent on gas per year? • His previous car before the Hyundai was a 1968 El Camino, which got about 15 MPG. How much money did he save over the course of the 70,000 miles? • How much money does he save per year by driving the car that gets 34 MPG vs. the car that gets 15 MPG?

  5. The answers • Money spent on gas: • 70000 miles/34 MPG = 2058.8 gallons of gas • 2058.8 gallons X $2.63 per gallon = $5414.64 • $5414.64/6 years = $902.44 per year El Camino 70000 miles/ 15 MPG = 4666.67 gallons of gas 4666.67 gallons X $2.63 = $12273.33 $12273.33 – $5414.64 = $6858.69 savings $6858.69/6 = $1143.12 savings per year
