  2. OBJECTIVES OF THIS SESSION… Utilize thoughtful questions, structured dialogue and a protocol to facilitate growth among team members Examine a protocol which facilitates the thoughtful analysis of data Actively engage in a protocol: The Collaborative Learning Cycle Process the experience

How utilizing your team’s expertise to thoughtfully analyze data benefits the RTI model… STUDENT ASSESSMENT DATA INFORMS TEACHERS ABOUT APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS Examining Data can improve instruction in tier 1 and informs actions taken in tiers 2 and 3 Progress monitoring is an essential tool in the RTI model

  5. The Collaborative Learning Cycle

  6. Activating and EngagingSurfacing Experiences and Expectations • Occurs before data is presented • Reveals predictions and assumptions • Sets the tone and establishes group norms • Honors and expands group member’s expertise • Seeking to understand—not to persuade

Exploring and DiscoveringAnalyzing the Data • Purposeful uncertainty—avoid rushing to conclusions • Exploring multiple possibilities within the data • Distinguishing, analyzing, comparing and contrasting • Recording ‘rough observations’ and ‘refined observations’ • Shared displays of data v.s. individual sheets create a collaborative experience

  8. Organizing and IntegratingGenerating Theory and Plans of Action • Sets the scene for detailed planning processes • Multiple voices and multiple interpretations serve the work at this phase • Framing the problem • Developing solutions • Rapid closure is the enemy at this stage

  11. Background Information… Urban school Enrollment of approximately 400 students Free and Reduced lunch rate of 91% Highly transient population Students receiving special education services: 21.6% Use of the tiered RTI model to respond to student’s instructional needs for the past 4 years

  12. The Data… Second grade reading scores from 2002-2008 indicating the number of students who are below, approaching, meeting and exceeding standard.

  13. Activating and Engaging What are some predictions we are making? With what assumptions are we entering? What are some questions we are asking? What are some possibilities for learning that this experience presents to us?

  15. Exploring and Discovering What important points seem to “pop out”? What are some patterns, categories or trends that are emerging? What seems to be surprising or unexpected? What are some thing we have not yet explored?

  17. Organizing and Integrating THEORIES: What are some inferences/explanations/conclusions we might draw? What additional data sources might we explore to confirm our explanations? ACTION: What are some solutions we might explore as a result of our conclusions?
