Using excel. To measure the volume of our class room. A reminder of how to use excel. First we made a plan. We decided which boxes we could make calculations for. The Red boxes should be taken away from the main box and the blue boxes will need to be added. Make a table of the measurements.

  1. Using excel

    To measure the volume of our class room. A reminder of how to use excel.
  2. First we made a plan
  3. We decided which boxes we could make calculations for. The Red boxes should be taken away from the main box and the blue boxes will need to be added.
  4. Make a table of the measurements Look at the highlighted box…… Is something missing from the column headers? Don’t forget to include units and uncertainties in the column header.
  5. Using your raw data from your measurements- fill in the table Your table should now look something like this. However…. The number of decimal places in the boxes should be the same as the number of decimal places in your uncertainties!
  6. How to fix the number of decimals: Highlight the numbers you want to change then ‘right-click’ and select ‘format cells.’
  7. In the dialogue box click on the ‘number’ tab. Then under ‘category’ select ‘number’. Then make sure the number of decimal places is the same as your number of decimal places in your uncertainties. Then click ‘ok’.
  8. Your table should now look like this:
  9. You now want to work out the volume: So make a new column header. (Again don’t forget the units! I will come back to the uncertainties for this box in a minute.)
  10. How to make it calculate: Click on the empty box where you want the calculation to go. Press “=“ Click on one of the boxes you want multiplied. (In this case B26.) Press ‘shift 8’ – ‘*’ (for multiply) Click on the box you want to multiply by. (In this case C26.) Do the same for other calculations you need: + - / or *. Then press ‘enter’.
  11. To apply this to the rest of the column: Move your curser to the bottom of the box with the formula you just made until it shows a little ‘+’ sign. Then click and drag the ‘+’ to cover all the boxes you want the formula in, then release. +
  12. Then fix the number of decimal places as before.
  13. Now use your answers to work out the volume of the room: Click on the box Press ‘=‘ Add the formula by clicking on the relevant boxes and the correct function (+ - / or *). E26+E30-E27-E28-E29 Then press ‘enter’
