Why Co- Terminus ? • Registration the same time as graduation • Now 14 universities have or are waiting for an accreditation of the co-terminus route • Many different formats have been developed • Part time, full time, adaptation of the placement degree already in place.
Other issues • Funding- WDC or WDD varying support depending on the various regions • Generic practitioners- the move towards making trainees again multidiscipline. • Think! how trainees are managed within a Pathology department
Our experience • Early in 2003- organised a meeting with the three acute Trusts in our SHA discussed putting in a joint bid to the WDC for supernumerary trainees encompassing the development of a co terminus degree. • Initial meeting was DM from each Trust and two training managers and the WDC
Bid Content • Increases necessary for development of service • Ageing workforce • DoH initiatives • National shortages of biomedical science staff
De Montfort University April 2003 • Full time BSc honours 3 year, BSc honours 4yrs with placement • Part time day release BSc honours 3 years grad dip 1yr • Course re-accreditation due April 2004
Requirement for Success • More work carried out at university the better • Multidiscipline- modules at university and in the laboratory • Co-ordinated across pathology • Recruited locally from schools • Interested in the job
Options • Initial meeting with DMU to discuss options early 2003 • Alter part time degree work based modules to fit portfolio • Increase the number of days at DMU • Block release to DMU
Other Options • Students are supernumerary so could attend university full time • Attend laboratory training in the vacation periods • Students rotate between departments
WDC Provide • 5 year commission initially • Funding for 15 students per year • Tax free bursary of £8,000 per annum • University fees paid • £10,000 set up for each site • Funding for a part time clerical administrator
DMU Provide • 3year attendance on full time BMS course at DMU • Graduation in November of final year • Co terminus training module which is credit-less developed for completion of the portfolio • Visiting tutors during laboratory training
Laboratory Training • Three year fixed term contract. • Laboratory based training within trusts during vacation time. • Rotation through all specialisms degree of greater specialisation in final year. • Input into DMU academic course.
Result • May 2004 degree accredited by IBMS • Second degree in the country • Recruited 15 students for Sept 2004 • 7 Leicester • 4 Kettering • 4 Northampton
What Do We Teach Them? • Basic analyses as in 2a3. • Collect evidence for their portfolio. • Some departments easier to demonstrate certain standards e.G QC, calibration in chemistry. Safety cabinets sterilisation disinfection microbiology. • Time out during busy times.
Potential Problem • Largest block is in the summer when staff on holiday but • Is also the time when we have least work • Plan carefully how we were going to satisfy the standards and how • Produce some standardised paperwork • Delivery of information by one person when possible
Training Organisation • I am the student’s manager. • Training is co-ordinated across pathology. • Generic parts of the portfolio are delivered in laboratory by myself or others to all students. • Some parts of the portfolio have been delivered during term time by one of the staff from the trusts.
Evaluation of Training • University tutors visit the training laboratory during each placement and question the students and a report written by the administrator • Very close co-operation with the university • I monitor the students portfolio at regular intervals.
Story So Far • Ist year students completed one year • Training going well in spite of other pressures • Staff enjoyed having the students who were keen enthusiastic and useful • Recruitment this year was quite difficult changed our marketing strategy
Recipe for Success • Great training officers • Staff willing to share knowledge and time • Plan ahead • Co-ordination • Monitor frequently
Recipe for Success • Develop good links with the universities can lead to other projects • Funded MSc • Associate practitioner training • NVQ training • Develop good links with the WDC/WDD • Access to pots of funding
