Meaning of Education • Education could be seen as wings for the progress of the human being. • It helps the individual to attain intellectual, physical and spiritual or emotional progress. • It helps the individual to live a happier life. • But for people without education, living comfortably turns difficult, especially in the modern world where specific skills are often needed to work. • (E.g. to be an Engineer, Doctor, Linguist, Lawyer, Pilot etc, specific skills are required which cannot be attained without EDUCATION.) • In short EDUCATION MOVES US FORWARD.   3. Deaf Education in India Before Independence • Bombay Institution for Deaf – Mutes (1885)-First Deaf School. Calcutta School for the Deaf (1895) – was the second school for the Deaf founded by J.N.Banerji. • J.N. Banerji wrote about the low status of Deaf people in Indian society. • The deaf were incapable of being educated. For though it was easier to convince the Deaf it was very difficult to convince their hearing parents. Because of their deep rooted beliefs that deafness and mental retardation were linked and deafness was the result of past deeds and could not be altered. • Prior Independence 24 schools for the deaf were established by missionaries and private institutions. • Oralismwas clearly the choice for Deaf Education.   4. Deaf Education in India Post Independence – School Situation • Oralism is still enforced in most schools. For teachers find it comfortable and parents are attracted to it. • Good teachers of the Deaf are almost impossible to find. They lack skills to truly educate their students. • Many teachers are satisfied if a child repeats perfectly what he was taught the previous day. • Shortage of teachers along with poor quality of teacher training program and NO SIGN LANGUAGE • No capable teachers who really understand the problem deafness causes. • Early 1970’s – Total Communication. • Late 1970’s – Importance of Sign Language. BUT • Given India’s long history of Oralism in Deaf education, using Sign Language as the primary instruction for Deaf students is yet to be seen. Dharmesh Kumar "Deaf Education" EOC-DU

  5. Research Topic – Peer Education Reasons • Deaf schools do not recognize teaching in sign language. • Hearing teachers in Deaf schools are not trained in Sign Language. They follow oralism. Sign language based online learning can change this scenario. • Reduces dependency on teachers as the students learn more with their own efforts. • Higher quality of instruction, as teaching and learning will be based on sign language. • A selected group of students undergo the English Learning Platform (ELP) online learning, who further teach their peers. • ELP is accessible 24 hours Dharmesh Kumar "Deaf Education" EOC-DU

Methodology • Identifying a Deaf community or Deaf institute or group where a good number of Deaf meet together. • Observing and studying this group • Conducting surveys and collecting data through questionnaires • Conducting test to select a group. • ELP training • Classroom teaching • Recording these through videos. • Feedback Dharmesh Kumar "Deaf Education" EOC-DU
