Blog 2: HeraldryAndCrests.com WHAT IS A COAT OF ARMS? A coat of arms is actually something that you see almost every day. As you send your children to school, you see it on their uniforms. As you visit some big corporate firm of ancient origins, you see it on their letterheads. A coat of arms is a symbol or design of heraldic background, associated with the achievements of a family, person corporation or state. Coat of arms symbols have many components. These symbols consist of a motto, a crest, a helm, a torse, an escutcheon, an order and an alternative motto. Supporters of the coat of arms are depicted on both sides of the escutcheon. To the top left, a Dexter is depicted while on the top right, a sinister. These are the conventional elements of an achievement.
