Getting to Know the Camera Point and Shoot vs. DSLR show and tell Digital Camera – a camera that captures the photo not on film, but in an electronic imaging sensor that take the place of film. Photo by M Fowler
Camera Parts • Show and tell: • Power, zoom, lens, shooting modes, viewfinder, display, battery, camera card, charger. Photo by S Breault
Camera Modes • Automatic vs Manual • We will use automatic and experiment with preset alternate modes.
The Exposure Triangle • Aperture, Shutter Speed, & ISO • Aperture-small, circular opening inside the leans that can change in diameter to control the amount of light reaching the camera’s sensor as a picture is taken.
Aperture Depth of Field changes
Aperature • F-stops • The lower the number, the larger the aperature = less light in the camera. • The higher the number, the smaller the aperature = more light in the camera. • So, f/2.8 is larger than at f/8.
Shutter Speed • - used to stop action or slow it (depending on the speed setting used) • Ex. Splashing pool water, running basketball player, flying hair away from face, etc. • Ex. Blurry background of traffic, clear point of focus in the foreground
Slow Shutter Speed
ISO • -a rating of film’s sensitivity to light (light sensor) • Typically automatically adjusted when using AUTO on point and shoot cameras. • Increase the ISO, photo quality decreases • Becomes grainy or “noisy.”
