Weekly Schedule- Aug. 5-6 Next Week: Laboratory Safety Biological Equipment
Read the following aloud. What is wrong?
Classroom Expectations and Procedures • The Biology of Learning • Activity and Homework: “Windows of • Myself” Daily Schedule- DAY 1 Note: Opening Handout signed and returned 3rd lesson
HW: Windows of Myself Divide paper into 4 equal parts. Write as much as you can (2 pages back to back).
Who is responsible? Shared Student Teacher
Essential Agreements In each group, write the 3 most important things that you think is necessary for a highly successful learning environment. In other words, how can we make your class the best science class ever?
Hoping to stir up a little interest in Mars and NASA, the folks in public relations released the image along with the following caption: "This picture is one of many taken in the northern latitudes of Mars by the Viking 1 Orbiter in search of a landing site for Viking 2. "The picture shows eroded mesa-like landforms. The huge rock formation in the center, which resembles a human head, is formed by shadows giving the illusion of eyes, nose and mouth. The feature is 1.5 kilometers (one mile) across, with the sun angle at approximately 20 degrees. The speckled appearance of the image is due to bit errors, emphasized by enlargement of the photo. The picture was taken on July 25 last year from a range of 1873 kilometers (1162 miles).

Brainstorm activity: Perspectives • Review: Laboratory Safety • Review of lab equipment • Spot the hazards and the good practice. • (Lab Safety Picture); Discussion. • Write down the 5 most important safety rules in • the lab and highlight them. • Discussion: Safety in the laboratory Lesson 3 – Lab Safety
Science Laboratory Rules • Do not enter the Lab unless a teacher is present. • No eating or drinking allowed in the Lab. • Please do not run or misbehave in the Lab. • If something breaks or spills, tell your teacher immediately! • Do not touch equipment unless you have been asked to do so. • Tie back long hair when performing an experiment. • Always stand when performing an experiment. • Wear protective goggles. • Keep your work area safe and clear of clutter. • Wash your hands when you finish in the Lab. • Listen carefully to instructions. • Dispose of wastes as instructed. • Closed shoes must be worn – no open toed sandals or flip-flops.
Lesson 3 – Lab safety 10mins Sharing: Perspectives 10mins Hazard signs mini test. 10mins Safety in the lab recap – scavenger hunt of basic safety features. Next lesson:Acids and Bases
Safety Rules The science laboratory is where you perform experiments and investigations. However, if you are to keep yourself and your friends safe, whilst not damaging equipment or apparatus needlessly, it is important that you follow some basic safety rules. What are these safety rules? Working in pairs write down five safety rules that you think are important in the science laboratory. Then decide which three are the most important. One person will write down your ideas, the other person will share your answers with the class. You have 10 minutes!
Science Safety Rules… 1. Never enter the laboratory without permission. 2. Always listen to instructions. 3. Never run in the laboratory. 4. Always wear safety goggles when performing an experiment. 5. Always stand up when performing an experiment (unless told otherwise).
Science Safety Rules… 6. If you break something tell the teacher straight away. 7. If you spill a chemical tell the teacher and wipe it up. 8. Do not make up your own experiments. 9. Tidy your apparatus away at the lesson’s end. 10. Never eat or drink in the laboratory. 11. If you wish to ask a question raise your hand.
Safety First! Always wear safety goggles!
Hazard Symbols Hazard symbols are a warning to people to let them know of the potential dangers a chemical or piece of apparatus could hold. You will need to know the hazard symbols for the following. Can you guess what they might look like? Irritant Harmful Toxic Oxidising Flammable Corrosive Explosive
Hazard Symbols Corrosive
Hazard Symbols Harmful
Hazard Symbols Irritant
Hazard Symbols Flammable
Hazard Symbols Oxidising
Hazard Symbols Toxic
Hazard Symbols Explosive
Hazard Symbols Dangerous for the environment
Exercise 1: Safety Rules Draw the table below and then fill it in. For each safety rule you must write down why it is very important to follow that safety rule: There could be harmful chemicals or apparatus inside.
Exercise 2: Name The Hazard Symbols Dangerous for the environment Harmful
Exercise 3: Name The Hazard Symbols Oxidising Explosive
Exercise 4: Name The Hazard Symbols Irritant Flammable
Exercise 5: Name The Hazard Symbols Toxic Corrosive
Exercise 6: Name The Symbols Harmful Toxic Oxidising Explosive
Exercise 7: Name The Symbols Dangerous for the environment Irritant Corrosive Flammable
Exercise 8: Which? 1. Which hazard symbol is shown on this drum of petrol? 2. Which hazard symbol would you find on a beaker of concentrated acid? Flammable Corrosive 3. If a chemical was poisonous when you drank it, which hazard symbol would you find on a beaker that contained it? Toxic
