WARNING!POZOR!!! Scabies is Highly Contagious! a.k.a = svrab
Scabbies is a transmissible ectoparasite skin infection that is caused by a type of mite ( = roztoč). • It is characterized by superficial burrows, intense pruritus (itching) and secondary infection. • The word 'scabies' in Latin is 'itch'.
Scabies is frequently misdiagnosed as intense pruritus (itching of healthy skin) before papular eruptions form. • Upon initial pruritus the burrows appear as small, barely noticeable bumps on the hands and may be slightly shiny and dark in color rather than red. • The itching may not exactly correlate to the location of these bumps. • As the infestation progresses, these bumps become more red in color.
Scabbies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) burrow, or tunnel, under the outer layer of skin. • These mites lay eggs under the skin and feed on blood. • The mites are about the size of a pinhead, are nearly transparent, and usually cannot be seen.
Scabbies symptoms • The most common scabbies symptom is extreme itching, particularly at night. • The itching is the result of an allergic reaction to the mites and their waste. • The scabbies symptoms usually appear from two to six weeks after becoming infested. However, people who have previously had scabbies can show symptoms within a few days.
The most common areas of skin affected by scabbies include: • between the toes and fingers • around the wrist • folds of the elbow, armpits, • beltline • abdomen • genitalia • nipples • buttocks • the groin.
Babies and small children may get it on the face, scalp or soles of the feet.

It can also be transmitted during sexual contact (= pohlavní styk).
You cannot get scabbies from pets. Scabbies mites only infest humans. The mites can only survive for three or four days if they are away from the human body. • You are contagious and can spread scabbies until all the mites and eggs are killed by a treatment.
