21 years of age or older Experience and willingness to work with persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities Appropriate knowledge and skills related to project areas and educational events Valid driver’s license and insurance to drive vehicles if necessary for the activity or event.
Be conscientious, dependable and reliable to complete assignment. Commit, support, adhere to, abide by and enforce 4-H Code of Conduct, University policies, ethical procedures and practices, UF volunteers policies and event or activity rules. Ability to communicate with youth. Understanding of the developmental characteristics of youth. Belief in the importance of the 4-H Youth Development Program
The final selection of chaperones is based on providing a safe and healthy environment for youth taking into consideration the potential risk factors. The County 4-H Extension Agent will consider recommendations and make final decisions for adult chaperone positions.
What Are My Responsibilities In Working With Youth as a 4-H Chaperone?
Become familiar with event and 4-H rules and procedures, including 4-H volunteer policies, 4-H behavioral expectations, emergency procedures, and disciplinary policy and procedure. Participate in a briefing for 4-H’ers and their parents before traveling to an event. Provide direct supervision of youth participants, yet be their friend and helper.
Be present to supervise and assist 4-H members at activities and lodging areas. Know the whereabouts of members at all times. Attend any and all adult briefings for or during the event and share information from meeting with youth participants. Assist with any activities as requested by event personnel.
To Apply Complete and return the Volunteer Application Form, Health Form and Code of Conduct Provide two references. Agree to a background check. Participate in an interview with the County 4-H Extension Agent.
After Selection Has Been Made Participate in an individual or group orientation and training. Gain an understanding of the goals and objectives of the event. Attend and/or assist with the youth participant orientation. Become acquainted with the youth attending the event.
