  1. Session 5- Quick, easy and effective ideas for using Wikis in MFLs

  2. Using wikis • Objectives for this session • To understand what a wiki is • To discuss reasons why to use a wiki • To explain how I have used wikis

  3. Using wikis First question- what is a wiki? - in effect, a type of webpage which can be edited by anyone who is a member of it But this video will explain it FAR better than I ever could

  4. Using wikis • Main wiki globally...Wikipedia • can be edited by all • sense of community

  5. Using wikis Key reasons for using a wiki1) Teacher has control over who joins the wiki and who can see pages, creating a safe environment2) Free3) No need to understand HTML code 4) Excellent storage opportunities- create a scrap book of work, long-term

  6. Using wikis Places to create wikis www.wikispaces.com (the wiki I use) www.wetpaint.com www.pbwiki.com

  7. Using wikis • How have I used a wiki? • Revision for GCSEs • Edgehill Euro 08 project • Collaborative writing

  8. Using wikis • 1) Edgehill Euro 08 project (www.edgehilleuro08.typepad.com / www.edgehilleuro08.wikispaces.com) • Designed to develop understanding of the 16 European nations involved in the European football championships of June 2008 • Wiki allowed me to • post a video to explain the project to teachers • provide technical support for teachers

  9. 2) Revision for GCSE exam • Key is that pupils were in charge • During course of 2 years, pupils had made podcasts of their answers to key GCSE questions. • Pupils shown how to use Jellycast, and a link set up to www.odeo.com, which provides media players. • media players added to their page, building up listening resources for the class, allowing peer- improvement Using wikis

  10. Using wikis • 2) Revision for GCSE exam • Hugely beneficial for audio learners • Allowed all pupils to keep pushing on • Made their learning distinct from other subjects • Could also develop joint pool of useful phrases • Ideal for keeping the boys interested

  11. Using wikis • 3) Collaborative writing • In their own user area, pupils begin to write an essay, answering a series of questions. • During the course of the lesson, they change users 4 or 5 times • - checking for errors, then enhancing the piece • Teacher can later see who has made what changes by viewing page history- excellent for assessment.

  12. Using wikis • 3) Collaborative writing • Issue- no concurrent editing • Next step is to look into the power of Google Docs

  13. How would your classroom do? Using wikis With thanks to Vicki Davis, Coolcatdog

  14. Using wikis My declaration Whether it be by e-mail, mobile phone, blog, wiki, ipod, video, podcast, vodcast, or even something that I haven’t yet discovered, I will endeavour to overcome my own fear of using these tools in order to ensure that my pupils have the maximum opportunity to learn. However, I will also always remember that, no matter what, the teaching and learning come first- not the technology.

  15. Using wikis If in doubt, ask Please feel free to get in touch for support / advice or any reason at all on... Mrfulleredgehill@yahoo.co.uk www.chrisfuller.typepad.com - use the Kontactr
