  1. Blood and Circulation

  2. Science Starter 10-20-09 Tell me everything you know about blood.

  3. Science Starter 10-21-09 • Why do I have a heart? • What is it doing for me?

  4. Science Starter 10-22-09 • Explain why my heart rate increases when I am exercising.

  5. Big Ideas! • I will understand the four main parts of my cardiovascular system and their functions. • I will understand problems with my cardiovascular system, and how to prevent them. • I will know the four parts of blood and their functions.

  6. Cardiovascular System Four Main Parts • Heart • The job of my heart is to pump blood.

  7. Four Main Parts • Arteries • My arteries carry oxygen rich blood away from my heart

  8. Four Main Parts • Veins • My veins carry oxygen poor blood back to my heart.

  9. Four Main Parts • Capillaries • My capillaries are very small and allow for my cells to get oxygen from my blood, and give carbon dioxide back.

  10. Science Starter 10-23-09 • Describe your arteries.

  11. Color Your Heart • Follow along with Mr. Wager as he takes you through the flow of blood through the heart. • You will color chambers, arteries and veins their appropriate color. • Red = Oxygen Rich • Blue = Oxygen Poor • You will also label the different parts of your heart. • This will be pasted into your journal.

  12. Bill Nye: Heart • As you watch the Bill Nye video, answer the questions on the video quiz. • This is worth a quiz grade so take this seriously.

  13. Science Starter 10-26-09 Explain why my heart is an involuntary muscle.

  14. Echo Read: The Heart • Follow along with the instructions from Mr. Wager as you echo read about the heart. • When you are finished, we will answer questions on the back of the worksheet.

  15. Partner Read: Blood Vessels • Take turns reading out loud at your tables the reading on blood vessels. • When you are finished, answer questions on the back of the worksheet.

  16. Reflection Question10-26-09 What are the four chambers of my heart?

  17. Science Starter 10-27-09 What are the three types of blood vessels?

  18. Cardiovascular Problems • Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. • These include atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart attacks, and stroke.

  19. Cardiovascular Problems • Blood vessels become full of sticky fat deposits and they clog things up. • When my blood vessel gets fully clogged, I will have a heart attack.

  20. Cardiovascular Problems • Cardiovascular problems are be caused by: • SMOKING • FATTY FOODS • STRESS • PHYSICAL INACTIVITY – LAZINESS

  21. Cardiovascular Problems • Cardiovascular problems are stopped by: • EATING HEALTHY • EXERCISE – BOTH AEROBIC & RESISTANCE

  22. Body Story: Heart Attack • Watch the video about John and his really bad day.

  23. Reflection Question10-27-09 How can I reduce my risk of having cardiovascular problems?

  24. Science Starter 10-28-09 Tell me a story about a time when your skin was cut. Describe what your blood looked like.

  25. Big Ideas! • I will understand the four main parts of my cardiovascular system and their functions. • I will understand problems with my cardiovascular system, and how to prevent them. • I will know the four parts of blood and their functions.

  26. What is Blood? • Watch and listen as Mr. Wager shows you what your blood is really made of.

  27. Echo Read: Blood • Follow along with the instructions from Mr. Wager as you echo read about the heart. • When you are finished, we will answer questions on the back of the worksheet.

  28. Science Starter 10-29-09 What is the job of my red blood cells?

  29. Table Read: Blood • At your tables, read the section on blood (pages 36-39) • When you are finished, Mr. Wager will give you a packet to fill out as a team.

  30. Science Starter 10-30-09 What would happen if I didn’t produce any red blood cells? Explain why.

  31. Four Parts of Blood • Red Blood Cells: My red blood cells and round disks that have a dent in the middle. • Their job is to bring oxygen to all my body cells and exchange it for carbon dioxide.

  32. Four Parts of Blood • White Blood Cells: My white blood cells are around to kill pathogens and get them out of my body.

  33. Four Parts of Blood • Plasma: My plasma is the liquid part of my blood, whose job is to take food to my body cells, and carry waste away from them.

  34. Four Parts of Blood • Platelets: My platelets are small, and their only job is to form a sticky web around cuts in my blood vessels to trap red blood cells and form scabs.

  35. What do we see?

  36. Reflection Question10-30-09 Describe your job as a student?

  37. Science Starter 11-02-09 • Starting in your right atrium, describe the path of a red blood cell through your body ending at the right atrium.

  38. Relay Race to the Brain • We will compete against the other science classes in a relay race through our human body. • We will pretend to be red blood cells and we need to get oxygen to our brain. • Block 03 – Turn in your journals

  39. Science Starter 11-03-09 • Describe the similarities and differences between arteries and veins.

  40. Blood 4-Square • Put your first name, last name, date and block number on your paper. • Turn it over and draw two lines on your paper to divide it in half twice. • In the first cell at the top, write the words “red blood cells” and then write: “deliver oxygen to all my body cells.” • Then draw a picture to represent this.

  41. Blood 4-Square • In the second cell, write the words “white blood cells” and then write: “fights off germs and pathogens.” • Now draw a picture to represent this • In the third cell, write the word “platelets” and write the words “clot my blood when I get a cut.” • Now draw a picture to represent this

  42. Blood 4-Square • In the fourth cell, write the word “plasma” and then write: “liquid part of my blood that delivers food to my body cells.” • Now draw a picture to represent this. • Add color to all pictures • A select few will be laminated and hung.

  43. Reflection Question 11-03-09 • Explain why school is or is not important to you.
