HPRF Faraday Partnership aims to support the accelerator community and enhance national capability in accelerator science through technology-based industrial activities. It facilitates collaboration among industrial, governmental, and academic organizations to develop microwave power-related businesses. The partnership consists of three industry clubs focused on accelerators, industrial processing, and defense. The Faraday Partnership also provides a single point of contact for RF systems specified in future projects, maintains research strategy and capability, and informs international projects of UK capabilities.

HPRF Faraday Partnership Industrial Activities in support of Accelerator Science David Wilcox Doug Clunie HPRF Faraday Partnership 26 September 2006
Background • HPRF Faraday is sponsored by DTI and PPARC to support the Accelerator Community and seek other applications for relevant technology to increase national capability. • Industry needs work to fill troughs between projects • In past no route to prototyping left UK in poor position to benefit from big programmes • This situation must be remedied if UK to gain economic as well as scientific benefit from participation in big science. • The partnership must be inclusive and technology based to encompass all relevant applications
Approach • An integrated partnership of UK based industrial, governmental and academic organisations to make a growing business built round microwave power • Commonality in technology and organisation • Three topic or industry clubs, led by industry with academic support • Accelerators • Industrial processing • Defence
Our method is to :- • Engage industry, laboratories and universities to pool knowledge and know-how i.e. Networking • Maintain and share up to date intelligence on future projects requiring RF technology • Provide asingle point of contact for RF systems specified for future projects • Inform international projects of UK capability • Develop and maintain research strategy and capability
Industry clubs. Accelerator Industry Club for particle physics. • High Power Components and subsystems • Seek international links • Participate as industry facilitator in R&D programmes • Industrial Processing Club. • National laboratory for research and prototyping. • Pursuing specific applications, mining and industrial processing – large potential growth • Defence Club Provide advice and support to MoD and others- Technology driver

Accelerator Club Activities • EIFast - European Industry Forum for Accelerators with Superconducting RF Technology. • ILC • MICE • Neutrino Factory • BASROC – medical applications • Accelerators for industrial applications
ILC • The major task is seen to be the successful industrialisation of SC cavity module production • Linear Collider Forum Of America appears well organised. • Linear Collider Forum of Japan has no need to engage industry; industrial involvement is the norm. • Europe is still looking for a way to marshal its industrial resources through EIFast • Multiplicity of nations does not help • Lack of a funding stream to support the infrastructure • Future of EIFast still not resolved
Europe and EIFast • Currently led by DESY emphasis on X- FEL and ILC technology • Established TORs and working procedures • XFEL Workshop held- deemed successful • Future funding for EIFast is a big issue • UK is seeking funding to enable Faraday Partnership to provide UK lead to replace DESY • Supported by the community • But currently unfunded • European position harmed by delay
Industrial View • Industry keen to participate • Technology of great interest • But timescales long and uncertainties too great for appreciable industrial investment • Need positive sign from funding agencies • Need support for prototyping as occurs elsewhere
ILC relevant programmes • 1.3 GHz RF system for ERL SC cavities • 1.3 GHz IOT • Prototype HF matrix converter driven power supplies • Phase locked magnetron • Industry Coupler contract with LAL
Way forward • Need indication of support from funding agencies followed by prototyping funding • The UK industry is keen to collaborate on properly funded programmes and projects • It imperative to have a detailed and costed project plan with strong project management • In key areas collaboration rather than competition should be used in the search for affordable solutions • So Explore EU Framework 7 bids
Way forward? • Currently the Faraday Partnership and Accelerator Industries Club provide the industrial focal point. • But DTI infrastructure funding for Faradays ceases in Sept. 2007. • General support for continuation in different form. • Partnership looking for new structure, responsive funding mechanisms and name. • Microwave Power Consortium UK MPCUK?
