  2. Ergonomics What does it mean? Ergonomics is the study of how humans interact with their environments and the products in them. Designers must consider ergonomics to ensure products fit well, can be operated appropriately and are easy to understand and use. Physiology Anthropometrics Ergonomics Psychology

  3. Ergonomics Anthropometrics Anthropometrics isthe study of measurements and dimensions of the human body. As designers you cannot design for 100% of the population. The aim is design for 90% of the population.

  4. Ergonomics Anthropometrics We are all individuals with different body sizes. The graph below shows the normal distribution curve for a given number of people against a particular body size i.e. height. Population 50th 5th 95th Height

  5. Ergonomics Anthropometrics Generally speaking when designers are considering the following aspects of a design they are influenced by the percentiles highlighted below: Clearance: 95th percentile Fit: 50th percentile Reach: 5th percentile

  9. Ergonomics Physiology Physiology is concerned with the capabilities of the human body. Is the vacuum cleaner light enough to use as it was intended? Can the trigger be operated easily?

  11. Ergonomics Psychology Psychology is how people interact with products mentally. How do we know the kettle is boiling the water?

  12. Ergonomics Psychology How do we distinguish between the buttons? Is this important to how the product functions?

  13. Ergonomics Psychology How do we know how to heat separate parts of the car?
