COMMUNITY COLLABORATION PROJECT Drew Evans, Bob Johansen, Isak Yoon November 8, 2010
COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP • Raise the bar with a challenge • Embrace change • Collaboration is key and it develops ownership
INDIVIDUAL IDEAS • Drew: “I would find a way to use sports to impact kids across the world and spread the gospel” • Bob: “Would find a way to surgically help children with a birth defect” • Isak: “I would organize a hands-across-the-world rally.”
COLLABORATIVE PROCESS • We each had 3 very different ideas • Wanted a project that was practical and feasible, but challenging • Brainstormed using our common interests and resources
BRAINSTORMING • Individual ideas coming together • Sawyer (2007) p. 61 • Osborn’s study: Increase effectiveness from individual brainstorming ideas collaboratively put together • We adopted that approach to our project. • We had our own ideas and met together to make our grand idea work • “Brainstorming is the most popular creativity technique of all time” (Sawyer, p. 60)
BRAINSTORMING • We gravitated toward a common interest of athletics, connecting people and building community, and influencing the youth… in the good way • We brainstormed for new ideas & the best solution looking at our resources • Our best resources were: • Bob possessed a contact with Homework House • Drew is a coach for APU’s baseball team • Isak is the athletic trainer for APU’s volleyball team
OUR GOAL • Organize community service based sports outreach clinics for local neighborhood students.
CLINIC OBJECTIVES • God & Sports • Character Development • Skill Development • New Experiences • Create a new partnership
APU BASEBALL • Golden State Athletic Conference winners in 2007 and 2008 • NAIA College World Series appearances in 2007 and 2008
APU VOLLEYBALL • NAIA # 8 Volleyball team • 2 Consecutive NAIA national tournament berth 2008 and 2009 • 3 in last 4 Seasons

THE CLINICS • 2 Different Clinics • Baseball and Volleyball • October 7 and October 21 • 20-25 Kids from the Homework House participated • Baseball • Base-running, Outfield Drills, Infield Drills, Batting Practice, Homerun Derby • Volleyball • Serving, Passing, Attacking, Games to 15
OUR COLLABORATION • We connected with our respected contacts individually • Stayed in contact with each other through e-mail • Met during Monday night classes to discuss our progress • We discussed how we were going to bring together the clinics and even the presentations
CHALLENGES • Availability and willingness of Homework House to participate • Would they allow for their kids to participate on 2 separate dates • Availability and Scheduling with the teams • Location of clinics: APU vs. Homework House Campus • Logistics of getting kids to campus or bring players to kids • Availability of facility • Suitable equipment • Weather
TRUST • We trusted the respective collaboration organizations to come through for us. • Homework House to fulfill commitment to bring kids to the clinics • Trusted each other to connect with our organizations to make the project possible. • We trusted that the teams would organize the clinics. • Did not know the extent the activities • We trusted each other to complete the project with the power point presentation and video.
Who’s Line Is It Anyway? • Improvised selecting which sports and clinics to organize • Gave full rein of the running of the clinics to the athletics teams • Rain became a factor as far as bringing the kids to APU • No solidified contingency plan was made because weather was unpredictable based upon 5-day forecast • Impromptu transportation was devised
GROUP FLOW • All members participating in the clinic, the athletes, the kids, the directors and organizers, bought into the objective behind the clinics and fully engaged • Blending egos • Constant communication through e-mail or in person • Equal participation • We all took a part in organizing the project
