  3. Uses of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) • Focus research • Formulate appropriate questions (for more structured, larger scale surveys) • Explore controversial topics

  4. Preparing FGDs • Determine the purpose • Situation analysis -good knowledge of local conditions -be aware of differences • Recruitment: similar background • Selection of participants -through key informants • Physical arrangements • discussion guide: written list of topics

  5. Conducting FGDs • Introduce the session -yourself, recorder, translator, participants • Encourage discussion & involvement - no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers - show interest groups’ ideas, but react neutrally - Avoid a question-and-answer session • Build rapport • Control rhythm of meeting in an unobtrusive way • Avoid being placed in the role of expert -no need to comment on everything -direct questions back • End meeting with summary, check for agreement & thank participants

  6. Strengths and Limitations • Implementation of FGDs is an iterative process • valuable spontaneous information within a short time • relatively low cost • However, it may be risky to use FGDs as a single tool • In case of very sensitive topics: • Select participants unknown to each other • Alternate with other methods (role play)
