Inflammation By Shaun Eibl The Body’s Non-Specific Immune Defence
Inflammation overview • There are three main stages in inflamation: • 1)Blood flow is increased to the damaged area and blood vessels vasodilate and become more permeable • 2)Phagocytes destroy foreign bodies • 3) repair of damaged/dead tissue
A sharp object breeches the 1st line of defence by puncturing the skin, thus allowing bacteria to enter the body.
Prostaglandins are released by damaged cells, attracting more phagocytes to the sight of infection.
Histamines released by granulocytes promote vasodilatation of the blood vessels and increase permeability.
Increased blood flow brings phagocytes such as neutrophils and macrophages and chemicals to fight off the infection.
Blood vessels are more permeable and phagocytes are able to pass through.
The bacteria are engulfed by the phagocytes through phagocytosis. Macrophages may also release interleukins to raise body temperature, resulting in fever.
Lysosome Nucleus Phagocyte Bacteria
The lysosome binds with the bacteria and releases digestive enzymes.
Once the bacteria have been destroyed the last stage of inflammation can begin. The last stage of inflammation involves tissue repair. Cells create new tissue to replace the dead or damaged cells. Skin tissue regenerates easily.
