Indochina Energy Holding (IEH) – Overview Indochina Power Sector Opportunity • Regional Growth • GDP growth in Vietnam, Lao PDR, and Cambodia projected to be over 7% annually over the next decade • Population demographics, urbanization, industrialisation trends and young demographics in a region of more than 110 million population • Regional Demand • Electricity supply needs to grow at 2 – 2.5x GDP to keep pace with GDP growth • Vietnam requires an energy investment of US $49 billion by 2020 to keep pace with demand; Lao will require $36 billion to develop its hydro resources by 2030; Cambodia $20 billion by 2030 • Undersupply as demonstrated by frequent blackouts in Vietnam and Cambodia with manufacturing and industry reliance on backup diesel generation in Vietnam and for base supply in Cambodia • Regional Integration and Regulatory Reform • Integration of the region’s power grid creating investment opportunities • Tri-Country Agreement signed in 2010 • Market mechanisms and deregulation initiated to support the increased reliance upon private capital for massive electricity growth demands • Private Capital • Private capital mobilisation for the power sector is both necessary and inevitable • There remains an ‘early entrant’ opportunity in the power sector • Limited access to information and existing owners create high barrier of entry to investments in the sector (*): per World Bank
Indochina Energy Holding (IEH) – Overview SAM will provide extensive local market knowledge and access • Indochina Energy Holding is seeking to capture US$400 – 500 million of investment opportunities arising from reduction of state control in the power industry and fast growing energy demand in the Indochina region based on its investment mandate which includes minority stakes of Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian: • SOE divestitures of power projects • Distressed IPP projects • Equity interest in power companies • Direct interest in brownfield “shovel ready” hydro and gas power projects • SAM holds strategic relationship with key bodies: Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and PetroVietnam (PVN) • Provides access to a strong identified pipeline of over 2,000MW hydro and gas power assets as investment targets, with investment priority for brownfield “shovel ready” hydro projects
Funan Impact Investment Holding (FIH) – Overview • Saigon Asset Management (SAM) is establishing Funan Impact Investment Holding (“the Fund”) – unique to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS*). Impact investment – investing in both social and financial return – has been characterized by the Monitor Institute as an “emerging industry” and by J.P. Morgan as an “emerging asset class”. • The Fund’s focus is in “inclusive business” opportunities in Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. These businesses serve and employ the Bottom of the Pyramid - lower middle income class of consumers and employees. These individuals are at the core of economic growth potential in the GMS - having a cumulative purchasing power exceeding US$47 billion in Vietnam alone. The untapped potential of businesses reaching these consumers is the focus of FIH. • The management team comprises a core of seasoned private equity social impact investment individuals from Unitus Impact - a San Francisco based firm, and SAM. FIH includes an experienced and dedicated professional management team and associates in the countries of operation, based in HCMC. • The JV between UI and SAM is uniquely suited to manage FIH in an innovative collaboration: • Social Impact Commitment and Financial Return Capability of the Senior Management Team – An investment team comprised of leaders with extensive experience in impact, venture capital, and private equity. • Recently completed an investment into a Vietnamese company, a livelihood-focused mobile money company in Vietnam, one of the first non-DFI backed livelihood impact investments in the region. • Regional Presence and Global Reach – Unparalleled team that includes UI’s leading impact investing skill set, fund raising and execution capability with SAM’s proven investment & deal sourcing expertise, & local knowledge. • Significant experience measuring social impact – Expertise in defining and tracking social metrics. * The Greater Mekong Subregion is understood to include Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Yunnan Province, PRC. For purposes of FIH, the FIH GMS mandate does not include Yunnan Province, PRC.)
Funan Impact Investment Holding (FIH) – Overview • Investment Mandate • Impact investments globally and in the GMS favour business sectors that meet basic needs (agriculture, water and low-cost housing) or supply basic services in education, health, energy and financial services: • Agriculture – Farmers capture little value due to weak processing capacity, poor infrastructure, weak supply chain and rudimentary techniques. Midstream opportunities exist through integration and improved management and technical process. • Aquaculture – Growing/changing domestic & international demand & shortages due to poor practices leave scope for technology & service aggregation improvements to move IB up the value chain. • Healthcare – Effective care is concentrated in urban areas - rural communities rely on poorly run, underfunded public facilities. Scope for investment in private clinics include operating hub & spoke model to serve marginalized areas; and tele-medicine & remote diagnostics. • Education – Instruction standards are poor leading to a lack of skilled & semi-skilled workers. Opportunities exist for investment into private, for-profit school chains & vocational training. • Clean Energy – Rural off-grid electrification has vast potential from clean and local natural resources. Investment into clean energy solutions spur productivity & economic potential. • Financial Services – Lending has declined post-financial crisis. There are opportunities to create value with agricultural finance, crop insurance, micro-health insurance, & mobile banking technology.
