Public Service Announcements. What is a PSA?.
E N D
What is a PSA? • There are many different definitions for a public service announcement (PSA) or public service ad, but the simplified version of PSAs are messages in the public interest that are broadcast by the media without charge, with the objective of raising awareness, changing public attitudes and behavior towards a social issue.
What is a PSA? • The most common topics of PSAs are related to health and safety • A typical PSA is part of a public awareness campaign to inform or educate the public about an issue such as obesity or compulsive gambling. The range of possible topics has expanded over time.
PSAs in Television Shows • Some television shows featuring very special episodes made PSAs after the episodes. For example, Law & Order: SVU talked about child abduction in one episode, so it had a PSA about child abduction. • Another example is when the original Law & Order did an episode about drunk driving, which then had a PSA about drunk driving.
What are the following messages and how are they conveyed: • House Hippo • Don’t Put It In Your Mouth • MADD Canada • Words Hurt • Heart & Stroke Foundation
Can a PSA be made for each of the following short stories, and if so, what are the issues? • The Kayak • On The Sidewalk, Bleeding • Lamb to the Slaughter • The Moose and the Sparrow • Gentlemen, Your Verdict • The Necklace
Your Assignment: • Create a PSA based on an issue from one of the short stories we have read so far. Use your knowledge of what we have learned in the media unit to help you. • Your PSA should be done in a word document, and should be printed in colour, if possible. • Due: Tuesday, October 7, 2014
