  4. SOPHOMORE SEMINAR GOALS Understand college admission criteria through a group activity Review graduation requirements/transcript Identify resources available for academic success Establish a timeline for Spring of Sophomore year Complete a Career Interest Inventory

What do colleges want? • Strong academic record • Strong SAT or ACT scores • fee waivers available for students on free or reduced lunch • take the PSAT again in October of Junior year and the SAT and/or ACT in the Spring of 2015 • Extracurricular, Athletic, and Community Involvement • Well-prepared application package – required demographic forms, essays/personal statements, and teacher/counselor recommendations • It is very important to get to know a few of your teachers and your school counselor so that you can get good recommendations for college

  6. What is a TRANSCRIPT?? The transcript is a report of all the courses you have taken and the final grades in each course. The level of rigor of each class is included on the transcript (AP, Honors). Your GPA (grade point average) for each year and the cumulative GPA for all the years up to now. The GPA is weighted—extra points for Honors and AP classes are accounted for. Your attendance record Your verified credits

  9. What are verified credits? A verified credit is earned when a student passes a course and the associated end-of-course SOL test. In some cases, students may utilize substitute tests or certifications to earn verified credits

Career Interest Profiler Activity (CIP): • The CIP is a tool that can help you discover the types of work activities and careers that match your interests. • When responding think about whether you would like or dislike doing a particular work activity if you had a chance to do it. • The more accurately you answer each question, the better your results will be.

  14. Sophomore /Early Junior Year Timeline Spring - Summer 2014 – Keep your grades. Do your personal best Spring 2014-Meet with your counselor to discuss the best courses to maintain or intensify rigor in your academic schedule during course registration. September 2014 – Start your Junior year strong and maintain good grades throughout the year. October 2014 – Register and Pay for your PSAT results Spring 2015- Register for the SAT or ACT
