Sophomore English February 16, 2014 • Hello and welcome and Happy Presidents’ Day! • Please grab a handout from the Take One Tray. • Here is today’s agenda: • Finish Works Cited page in the Library • Developing a Claim: Defend, Qualify, and Challenge • Develop your synthesis paper claim and begin outlining
Developing a claim • When making an argument about a subject, there are three ways to approach your claim. • To Defend • To Qualify • To Challenge
Defend • Your thesis and support will be confirming the statements made or the question asked in the prompt. • For example, if you choose to defend on this essay, you will be confirming and proving the idea that our identity is shaped by our culture. • Example: • Statement: Justin Bieber should be deported to Canada. • Defense: Because of his recent run-ins with the law, including a DUI, felony vandalism charges, and assault allegations, Justin Bieber should be returned to Canada.
To Qualify • Your thesis will be supporting the statement or position in the question but with conditions. • This one is tricky, so let’s examine this example closely. • Example: • Statement: Justin Bieber should be deported to Canada. • Qualify: While Justin Bieber’s recent behavior should not be condoned, Justin Bieber should be deported from the United States only if he either continues this behavior for an extended period or commits a more heinous crime.
To Challenge • Your thesis and support defy or disagree with the statement or position implied in the question. • Example: • Statement: Justin Bieber should be deported to Canada. • Challenge: Although Justin Bieber has committed several legal transgressions in recent weeks, his status in the United States should remain secure because of his music’s positive impact on the economy, his cultural influence, and his musical talent.
Class Practice • Let’s try an example together. • Statement: John Calipari is the greatest coach in college basketball. • Defend: • Qualify: • Challenge:
Partner Practice • Now, with a partner, try creating claims to defend, qualify, and challenge these two statements: • Hip hop music is the best music genre. • Spring break should be cancelled in order to make up for snow day.
Develop your Claim • Now that you have practiced creating claims to defend, qualify, and challenge various statements, you will work independently to develop your response to the synthesis prompt. • Draft claims to defend, qualify, and challenge this statement, then decide which one you want to use as the controlling idea for your paper. • Statement: Culture affects the way one sees others and the world.
