Shareholders v executives • Shareholders are interested in • Increased capital value – rising share prices • Dividends – return on investment • Executives are interested in • Long term growth • Reinvestment of profits
Apple • Apple had $164.5bn of cash (June 2014) • Apple want to keep it • Most of it is overseas • In they bring it back into the US it will be taxed • Shareholders ( Carl Icahn) want Apple to spend $50bn buying back shares • A big return on investment for the shareholders
Customers v managers • Customers have expectations of products • Incremental improvements • Minimal retraining • Obvious utility and value • Managers want to: • Optimise development and product lines • Reduce support burden for legacy products • Minimise costs and maximise profits
