What is Schizophrenia? • “a severe form of mental illness affecting about 7 per thousand of the adult population, mostly in the age group 15-35 years.”
Symptoms Positive: -Delusions -Hallucinations -Thought disorder -Disorganised Behaviour Negative: • Loss of interest in everyday’s life • Lack of emotion/ motivation • Social withdrawal Cognitive: -problems with making sense of information -difficulty paying attention
Relative risk of schizophrenia depending upon month of birth
Treatment • Antipsychotic medication • Antidepressant drugs • Mood stabilizer -> 1st generation antipsychotics: negative effects are not so well treated -> 2nd generation antipsychotics: positive effects are not so well treated
