Land Ordinance of 1785 • Solved the problem: How do we get the money we need to run this new country? • Raised money by dividing and selling all the western lands gained in the French and Indian War • Land was surveyed and divided in 36 square mile plots called “townships” • Each “township” was divided into 36 sections (each was a square mile or 640 acres) • Each 640 acre section would be auctioned to the highest bidder at a minimum price of $1 per acre • The 16th section was reserved for public schools
