Phase II, Geospatial and Semantic Cloud Computing • The FGDC OS, in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Government Services Administration (GSA) is: • Seeking nominations of projects for the second year of geospatial cloud computing testbed, and • Offering this opportunity through pilots for public-facing geospatial systems to transition themselves to the Amazon Web Services environment for up to a year. • At the end of the testbed, agencies may elect to continue operations on their own account. • The objectives of GeoCloud-II are to: • Validate cloud as a vehicle for platform savings and performance, • Provide agencies with reusable tested and accredited platforms for other initiatives, • Provide cloud business case information on benefits, costs and best practices. Phase II, Geospatial and Semantic Cloud Computing • To meet these objectives, HHS will partner and invest with the FGDC Secretariat in the following services: • Deploy and refine the existing cloud reference platforms for Windows/ArcGIS and CentOS/Drupal/OpenGeo that can support multiple Geospatial and semantic applications. • Identify commonalities, cost-benefits analysis and lessons learned through the implementation. • Derive cloud reference architectures and reference implementations. • Publish commonalities, cost-benefits and lessons learned to the Federal Government Community. • Work with the FedRAMP program office at GSA for certification of aforementioned reference platforms.
Phase II, Geospatial and Semantic Cloud Computing • Applicants must be interested in participating and able to commit staff resources for the porting and operation of their own services in the Cloud environment. • FGDC Secretariat will provide funding for the monthly Amazon hosting fees and with HHS will subsidize technical support to the projects. • Bi-weekly teleconferences will be held to maintain progress and information exchange among the projects. • Announcement email was sent to CG (and others), 1/4/12. • Email contains directions on information required in submissions. • Please submit your brief project nominations to GeoCloud-II via email to the FGDC Secretariat project manager Doug Nebert at (ddnebert@usgs.gov) no later than January 13, 2012. Project selection and kick-off telecon will occur the week of January 16.

FGDC Standards Activities The Federal Trails Data Standards, FGDC-STD-017-2011, has been posted to the FGDC web site, http://www.fgdc.gov/standards/projects/FGDC-standards-projects/trail-data-standard/Federal_Trail_Data_Standards_FGDC-STD-017-2011.pdf. The Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) project team plans to submit a final draft to the FGDC OS for pre-endorsement review this month. INCITS L1 Standards Activities • L1/U.S. TAG last met December 12 at Esri, Vienna, Virginia. Votes: • ISO DIS 19157, Geographic information – Data quality, to International Standard (IS) – INCITS recommended that L1 abstain if consensus were not reached. • ISO DIS 19153, Geographic information - Geospatial Digital Rights Management Reference Model (GeoDRM RM) – L1 voted to recommend publication as an International Standard (IS). • L1/U.S. TAG will meet next on Tuesday, April 17, at USGS • Refer to read-aheads for more information on INCITS L1 domestic and international standards activities.
OGC Standards Activities • GML 3.3 - On January 2, the OGC Technical Committee approved GML 3.3 as an official OGC standard.
