The Martus Project

The Martus Project, initiated by Marc B. Levine and The Benetech Initiative, aims to provide technology tools for civil society organizations to collect, safeguard, organize, and disseminate information about social justice violations. Martus is a simple, email-like software that ensures security and control over information with backup servers for safeguarding. The solution design includes a simple installation process, transparency through free software, and automatic encryption. Martus is currently being used for monitoring activities, safeguarding social justice information, basic organization, and delivering information to the intended audience. Regional offices can submit bulletins that can be reviewed, revised, accepted, and classified by headquarters. Martus is being used in over 50 countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Thailand, Nepal, Colombia, and Sierra Leone, with upcoming projects planned for Nigeria, Kenya, Algeria, and Egypt.
