About the PNRI Formerly the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission or PAEC National competent authority on nuclear matters Established in 1958 by RA 2067 created the PAEC with a dual mandate to promote the peaceful applications of atomic energy and regulate the use of radioactive materials Reorganized in 1987 under EO 128 PAEC was renamed to PNRI under the Department of Science and Technology Rationalization Program under EO 366 approved on 29 March 2010- Creating the Technology Diffusion Division Brief History

Nuclear InfrastructureBataan Nuclear Power Plant-1 • 1976 – the contract for the PNPP was signed by the NPC and Westinghouse which provided for the NPP’s completion in mid-1983 • Government decided to mothball the plant in May 1986, and not to operate it in June 1986 • Congressman Cojuangco Bill: rehabilitation, commissioning and commercial operation of BNPP-1 • A Feasibility Study to Rehabilitate the BNPP conducted by KEPCO
Nuclear InfrastructureThe Philippine Research Reactor -1 (PRR-1) • The PRR-1 began operating in 1963 • A 1 MW open-pool general-purpose General-Electric research reactor provided by the U.S.A. under the Atoms for Peace program • Shutdown in 1984-1988 to replace components to convert the PRR-1 into a 3MW TRIGA-type reactor • The PRR-1 is currently under Research Reactor Decommissioning Demonstration Project (R2D2P) of the IAEA

PNRI Policy Instruction 001, S. 2004 (October 7, 2004) which laid down the commitment of the PNRI to the establishment and implementation of a PNRI IMS PNRI Special Order 383, S. 2004 (October 7, 2004) creating the IMS Project Committee with the Deputy Director as Project Leader PNRI Office Order No. 5 S. 2004 (October 12, 2004) enjoining the participation of PNRI employees in the development AND implementation of PNRI IMS Regulatory arm of PNRI, NRLSD was certified to ISO 9001:2000 QMS by Certification International Phils., Inc. on November 28, 2008 Status of QA/IMS in PNRI
IAEA-PNRI Workshop on IMS, March 2009 PNRI Special Order 235, S. 2009 (May 5, 2009) creating the PNRI IMS Project Team to establish the PNRI IMS based on IAEA GS-R-3 Analytical Measurements Laboratory granted ISO/IEC accreditation in July 2009 NRLSD, Regulatory Body was Certified to ISO 9001:2008 in August 2010 (transition) IMS Manual developed by the IMS Project Team currently being circulated to the PNRI Top Management for comment Status of QA/IMS in PNRI
Future Plans • Finalization of the IMS Manual • Conduct of Workshops on the Preparation and Documentation of PNRI IMS • Designation of IMS Management Representatives and Document Custodians in each Division • Writing of documents by process owners (Procedures Manual, Work Instructions Manual, etc) • Implementation of the PNRI IMS • ISO Accreditation of PNRI services and Laboratories as required by the Philippine Government
