Crabs and Crabbing By Sarah Wheeler
Crabbing • Crabbers use a crab pot to catch the crabs • Use chicken or fish for bait • Use a net to pick up any stray crabs • Wear protective gloves so they don’t get pinched
Crabs • Crustaceans • Invertebrates that have an exoskeleton • Ten legged animals that walk sideways • Omnivores • Communicate by waving their pinchers • Usually live in freshwater
Economic Impact • The state of Maryland said that harvesting of certain crabs is prohibited • As a result, crab sales went down • People who harvested these crabs lost their jobs
Regulations in Maryland • Harvesting immature female crabs is prohibited • Male crabs must be 5 in long • No more then 30 traps can be set out • One bushel of crabs per person but no more then two bushels if two or more people are on boat
Environmental Issues • The Bay is being polluted by run-off of chicken manure from the poultry industry • The pesticides people are putting on their lawns are running into the Bay when it rains
