  1. Crabs and Crabbing The Animal The Economy it Creates Regulations Environmental Issues Affecting the Industry

  2. All About Crabs -Crabs are invertebrates. Their exoskeleton protects them from predators and provides support for their bodies. -Crabs are decapods crustaceans which have a very short tail and are covered with a thick shell. -There are about 6,793 species of crab found in all of the oceans around the world. - Crabs can be as small as the pea crab which is only a few millimeters wide to the Japanese spider crab which can have a leg span up to 13 feet.

  3. ….All About Crabs • Crabs have five pairs of legs • Crabs are omnivores and some feed primarily on algae, others feed on mollusks, worms, crustaceans, fungi, bacteria , and organic non-living material. • 1 million tons of crabs are being eaten annually in restaurants and homes all over the world. • Marine crabs breathe underwater using gills… land crabs have two cavities that act like lungs and allow them to breathe air. • After they mate, the blue crab and others, deposit two million eggs and in a two week period the eggs will develop into larva.

  4. The Economy Crabs Create - In places where the crab is a main resource, they have a huge impact on that economy. If there are lots of big, healthy crabs in the bay when crabbing season starts, then the crabbing economy, and the people whose income depends on crabs, will be good. But, if we crab the bay too hard, then the number of crabs in our bay will decrease, which won’t allow for the crabbers to get as many crabs, which in return will decrease their income. Which in total with bring down that economy.

  5. Crabbing regulations -You must have a crabbing license. -When crabbing from shore, you are limited to two bushels of craps per day. -For up to 85 crab pots= $48 -For 86-255 crap pots= $79 -For 256-445 crab pot=$127 • All licenses are valid for one year and expire December 31 in the year it was issued • Anybody with a ‘Commercial Registration License’ must report all of their catches

  6. Environmental Issues -Over crabbing -Not enough crabs for a good industry -Harming the water in which the craps are located -Disrupting the natural cycle of the crabs
