challenging RobinwoodComponent 4 Promotion of Energy from Local Wood Contributions promised
clearly defined • Wood Energy component • …encourages the use of wood cut-offs and waste from the wood chain. A reduction in the use of fossil fuels,… will invigorate the economy and stimulate technological innovation. • Planned results: • Consumers will receive information on wood fuel • Increased sales of wood as a fuel source • New suppliers of innovative technology in the area • Politicians and SMEs are aware of biomass potential
countable • Wood Energy component – Indicators to be used • Volume of sales of fuel wood (10% increase over 2003) • Number of forest owners using wood off-cuts(10% increase over 2003) • Projects approved at political level or investments by companies or individuals (at least 6)
practically speaking • Wood Energy component – First outputs • 6 reports on regional resources and maps (June 2005) • Report on agents in the region (June 2005) • 1 catalogue of technologies and logistical systems available (Dec 2005) • 1 joint survey into needs and wood characteristics (Dec 2005)
first priority • Still to be done from 1st half year : • Reports have to be submitted to Brandenburg (including the information using the set up indicators, a detailed list of stakeholders and quantitative indications of wood fuel sales and forest owners engaged for 2003). • Brandenburg will comment on the results and ask for additional information to get a consistent picture. • After final transfer of information Brandenburg will edit a report on the situation of wood fuel in 6 European regions (as a basis for the conference).
manifold • Wood resources (demand finds its resource): • Forest residues- first thinning operations- crowns- final cuttings- others • Process residues incl. Pellets • Short rotation copices • Wood waste for • Heat production • Electricity production (small <2MW, big up to 20 MW) • Fuel production
someone who needs • Consumers (according to market development): • 4. Private Households (5-20 kW, 100-200 kWh/m²) • Housing development (up to 20 houses) • 2. Public buildings (50-500 kW) • Housing companies (500-2,000 kW) • 3. SMEs (also electricity) • 1. Wood processing companies (200-2,000 kW) • Electricity producer
technology economy perception regulations governing sales
moving • Technologies: • Cutting, moving • chipping • drying • pelletizing • transporting • Burning (comparison)/ gasifying (Innovation) • Small CHP • separating • disposing
stand complexity • Regulations: • Forest certification • Fuel quality • Load restrictions • Building regulations • Emission regulations • Waste disposal restrictions • Taxation • Grant schemes (contribution to total costs)
to influence • Economy: • Competitors (technology, suppliers, convenience) • Investments (economies of scale) • Building adjustments • Fuel prices • Loans • Subsidies
examine carefully • Perception (no sales without satisfaction): • Yesterdays fuel • Fighting climate change • Saving money • Getting some extra sports • Making use of residues • Doubting convenience • Enhancing regional economy • Being modern • Dirty, polluting

to be served • Entrepreneurs • Forest owners • Farmers • Fuel producers (logs, chips, pellets) • Installers • Fuel traders • Oven, Boiler traders • Boiler manufacturers • Energy service companies • Wood processing companies • Waste companies • Specialized engineering companies
countable • Obstacles, Barriers • Missing knowledge • No fuel available • High investments • competing fuel • missing political support, missing visions • Cheap fuel from abroad • Levers, accelerators • Brochures, training, demonstrations • Logistics, traders, • Contracting, grants • better marketing • Lobbying activities, consistent action
cf. especially minutes SC3 • Partner’s tasks for the preparation of the int. wood energy conference (Jan 23rd-27th, 2006): • Ask 2 – 3 speakers for the different thematic sections of the conference (political constraints, wood fuel production, agroforestry). • Ask the forestry faculties in your country whether they would send students for the first two day lectures to Eberswalde. • If lecturers would like to contribute to these lectures they are welcome. • Translate the 1st announcement to your local language and distribute them to interested participants.
Partner’s tasks for the preparation of the int. wood energy conference (Jan 23rd-27th, 2006): • Prepare yourself with a list of addresses for the final version of the conference programme
specific • Task for 2nd half year: Documentation on Technology and Fuel Quality (1) • Every partner should give a description on typical production methods of wood fuel from first thinning, final cutting, wood processing and waste wood production including technological and economical parameters.(+ innovations) • Every partner will describe typical installations for private homes, public buildings and SMEs using technical and economical descriptions on heat demand, fuel supply, storage, feeding, furnace, emission control, control, ash disposal, building envelope.(+innovations)
specific • Documentation on Technology and Fuel Quality (2) • Every partner will describe typical installations for electricity production (small or large scale) including constraints of the energy market where it has to compete with. • Every partner will give information on technology providers and R&D institutions in his country that work on the improvement of one or the other technology step. • Please give information as well on quality parameters and quality control that are being used in trading wood fuel with regard to production and combustion technology.
