  1. Ralph Mcquarrie By Robert Howells

  2. Background • Born: June 13, 1929 in Gary, Indiana, United States • Died: Berkeley, California, U.S March 3, 2012 at82. • Studied: California’s Art Center College of Design • Genre: Concept art • Areas of work: Main life spent creating designs and ideas for Star Wars. Also worked on doing concept art for Battlestar Galactica and ET.

  3. “Many artists work their entire lives without such recognition, so I realise how fortunate I am. And I owe it all to Star Wars.” (Ralph Mcquarry) How he became involved with the concept art for Star Wars: • After he was finished on the job of working on Galactic, which never made it to the movies, his bosses, Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins were friends with George Lucas and introduced them. • George Lucas asked Ralph if he could make his ideas for Star Wars into art. He then ended up creating the first concept art in 1976 called “ The Droids in the Desert” • Ralph then went to make much more concept art for Star Warswhich helped George pitch his movie to Hollywood and get his story made into a movie.

  4. Examples of work

  5. Chosen Piece Name: Docking Bay 94 Artist: Ralph Mcquarrie Size: 15x8.5 inches Date made: c. 1976 Made using: Acrylic paints and sketched using pencil. Used for: Star Wars , A New Hope

  6. Subject matter: The painting contains a spaceship which is one of the most noticeable objects and shows its set in an advanced time. The work represents a scene in Star Wars A New Hopeand content has been imagined by Ralph's ideas and inspirations. What is the artist trying to convey?: Ralph is trying to represent the beginning of an adventure for the people on the left, while the single person on the right is awaiting them. Content: Narrative Content: The story shown in this painting is that C3P0, R2D2, Chewbacca, Obi Wan and Luke are going to go aboard the Millennium Falcon to find and save Princess Leia, which is owned by Han Solo (Under the ship). The story genre is adventure and science fiction.

  7. Process Refinement: This was not the original version of the Millennium Falcon. Ralph had made previous designs but it was later refined into this. Methods and techniques: • Ralph Mcquarry worked before the time of Photoshop and computers, so he did all his work by hand. He began by drawing quick sketches of the image as the same size he was going to paint. • After this he would then refine the drawing on tissue. Sometimes he would use several layers of the tissue, which would express different levels in the painting. • He would then go onto his illustration board and tape out the size he was working on. Then he would put a coat of acrylic on it to remove the white. His previous sketch could then be put onto the board as a guide. He would trace the parts he was going to paint later on. When Ralph completed his tracing he would use acrylic paints and work from the background to the foreground, painting in silhouettes for the foreground objects, and then trace down the details from the original illustration into the silhouette. He would keep painting until he thought the piece was complete. The final piece of concept art Ralph chose was actually used as a shot in the movie and barely any changes were made.

  8. Form The main formal elements include: Scale, perspective, textureand colour. Scale: You can tell that Han Solo is miniature compared to the Millennium Falcon which shows it is a huge ship. Colour: The docking bay they are in is a light brown on the floor and walls of the building. This portrays they are in a sandy setting. Perspective: The main characters on the left are bigger in size which shows their closer to the viewer, whereas Han Solo is in slightly less detail and is further back. Texture: The colour of the landscape can also help tell what the texture would be like. From stating what the colour was, we can tell the texture on the walls is very rough and chipped. The floor however, would be dusty and grainy. The Millennium Falcon has marks and holes in it, which shows it’s been damaged and that the texture is old and frail. The depth in this scene has been created by solidity as the further back the picture goes, the less detailed the image is such as Han Solo and the wall behind him. The focal point in this piece is probably the Millennium Falcon, as it takes up the majority of the image and is placed in the middle of the scene for more attraction towards it.

  9. Mood • Thepiece makes me feel that there is a sense of adventure and if you were to look at this for the first time and knew nothing about it you might be wondering what their adventure is and if they will complete it. • I think the mood is hopeful as there is a large group of them. • I also think the artist felt passionate when creating this work because they are going into space, where it’s unknown. • The work does not convey any feeling of death as the image seems rather like the beginning of something. • The atmosphere gives an expectation of danger. This is shown by the damage on the ship and the weaponry.
