Is Race Real? • Where did it come from? • Why is it used? • What is racism?
What is ethnicity? How is it different than race? 1. identity with a group of people who share the cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth. Thus: customs, cultural characteristics, language, common history, homeland, etc... 2. a socially created system of rules about who belongs and who does not belong to a particular group based on actual or perceived commonality of origin, race, culture. This notion is clearly tied to place. Turkish Armenian Puerto Rican Mongolian Japanese Kazakh Thai Chinese
Race • Race vs. Ethnicity • Race includes traits that are passed genetically from parents to children – but this is tricky • Only early humans were unique, genetically, but this uniqueness quickly vanished once humans began interacting • Concept of race more of a social construct than a biological determination • Wasn’t until late 1600s that category “white” existed • Historically, various immigrant groups were not considered “white” … “No whites do that kind of work, only Swedes.” • So biological foundation for race is almost meaningless, and has been used as a foundation for racism for past 400 years.
